2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult read
An Introduction to Fire Dynamics, 2nd Edition by Dougal Drysdale is hard to read, the material is not clear and I found that it did not contain all the formulas necessary to solve Heat Release Rate problems. I ended up searching the internet and found a gov't publication, Fire Dynamics Tools (FDTs) prepared for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Fire Science, December 15, 2008

This book is not only an introduction to fire dynamics but is the most important single resource to be used as the foundation for studies in fire science. It covers all the applicable basic materials and sets the stage for the student to be able to pursue further studies in a classroom or independently. It should be mandatory reading for anyone involved in fire reconstruction, fire research, or who is simply interested in the field of fire science.

I have had the book in my library for over 10 years (including the 1st edition) and find myself continually going back to it during the course of my work.

A highly recommended read and purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars The Master Speaks - Again, August 21, 2006
This review is from: An Introduction to Fire Dynamics, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
An excellent update of Dr. Drysdale's "must-have" 1985 introduction to advanced fire physics. Dr. Drysdale brings the reader up-to-date (as of the 1998 publication date) on the state of the art in fire behavior, analysis, prediction and modeling.

I bought the paperback, because (a) the hardback is more expensive (Dr. Drysdale is Scottish, after all...); and (b) the 3rd edition is hopefully only a few years away. Readers in active day-to-date fire science application work probably will want the more durable hardback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire Dynamics, and introduction to, January 10, 2009
This review is from: An Introduction to Fire Dynamics, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This is an excellent book on fire dynamics. A great read/study. A background in math, physics, fluid mechanics and combustion is helful prior to reading this book, but is not required. Mr Drysdale is a detailed researcher and an excellent writer. His lack of inclusion of hard data and discussion on the influence of fire sprinklers on fire dynamics is the great missing link of this book. Sad.
