With a unique emphasis on possible solutions to world health problems, this book addresses all the key issues of global health at a level that is basic enough so that students from a variety of majors can understand the material. It will give the reader: An understanding of biological and social aspects of major global health issues, especially in the areas of infectious disease, nutrition, and environmental health. A knowledge of population groups that are at increased risk of poor health and familiarity with policies and programs designed to reduce health inequalities. A familiarity with global health vocabulary, the basic methods used to assess global health, and the tools to locate and understand additional global health information. The author has included over 170 tables and figures to illustrate important concepts, as well as a supplemental chapter on how to read journal articles. The text is also accompanied by downloadable instructor resources, including PowerPoint slides, a TestBank, and an Instructors Manual with suggested discussion questions and sample syllabi.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good start - but incomplete, and needs revision, May 20, 2011

suzyf921 "suzyf921" (Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Introduction to Global Health (Paperback)
I teach a large undergraduate class in global health and this was the second textbook I have tried for the course. It is quite strong on infectious disease and epidemiology - but almost totally silent on noncommunicable disease, which is an unforgivable omission these days. Student recommendations were not very enthusiastic, so I switched this year to another book. I am considering returning to it next year, however, and supplementing it with my own selection of articles on NCDs. If a second edition is contemplated, please include the NCDs and road traffic accidents as well - major causes of morbidity and mortality in low and middle income countries.
PS I was prompted to write this brief review by the totally LAME reviews posted by students - commenting before they had read the book, or worse, giving it one star because it had marks in it!! Hello - the author did not put those marks in there. Buy a new copy if you want a clean copy! Jeez. Let's be intelligent about these reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Global Health, January 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction to Global Health (Paperback)
I bought this book for a class. It is very readable, interesting, informative, clear, and to the point. It's well organized with headings, key terms in bold, interesting maps, graphs, diagrams, etc. I've often used it as a reference in my life outside of class as well. Definitely a good book for anyone interested in public health or international development.

1.0 out of 5 stars Am I ever going to receive my textbook?, January 30, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction to Global Health (Paperback)
I am a college student who just got the list of books I need to purchase. As the semester has begun, I need to have started reading this book for class as of yesterday. I ordered this book four days ago, under "one day shipping". This book is still "Not Yet Shipped". Obviously costumer service is not cared about much here. When will my book be shipped? I paid extra to receive it early!
