Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide is designed to help you understand the extraordinary effect group therapy provides in helping to relieve human suffering. Practical and at times humorous, this book combines theory, practice, and practical suggestions in areas that are rarely covered in academic settings such as the problematic client, the setting for your group sessions, a group contract, and several group therapy approaches. A plethora of information is offered for graduate students and practicing clinicians.

Introduction to Group Therapy will give students and clinicians a solid direction, eliminating feelings of disorientation when starting groups. In this excellent text, you'll explore several areas of group therapy to help you alleviate your clients’suffering, including:
  • the history of group therapy
  • how to set up your office
  • internship, practice, and residency transference
  • forum dialogues with senior clinicians
  • discussions about the group therapy circle
  • the physical representation of group
  • contemporary issues in group therapy
  • problematic clients
Thorough, well-organized, and based on first-hand accounts, this book is also a great resource for experienced clinicians who need proven and expert advice from colleagues in the field. Introduction to Group Therapy effectively combines theory and practical suggestions in one volume to help you offer improved therapy to clients.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A MARVELOUS TEXT for students new to group therapy. Written in a conversational, often first-person form, it is a highly readable text. . . . Includes questions at the end of each chapter. . . . One particularly fascinating section has senior therapists from a variety of theoretical viewpoints all respond to the same group scenario." -- J. Scott Rutan, PhD, Senior Faculty, Boston Institute for Psychotherapy, Massachusetts

"A MUST READ FOR CLINICIANS AND THERAPISTS. This excellent book is clearly written, highly informative and insightful. It is chock-full of practical therapeutic suggestions and strategies for the group leader to effect change and growth. . . . I highly recommend this book to all those involved in group process therapy." -- Herbert L. Rothman, MD, Medical Director, Mount Sinai Outpatient Partial Hospitalization Program, Miami Beach, Florida

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity where clarity is sorely needed., October 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
Every once in awhile, a book comes along in our field that sheds new light on an important topic in a clear, understandable manner without diluting the information. Dr. Fehr's practical guide to group is one such example. He has provided something for everyone, from the beginning group therapist to the experienced clinician. His real life vignettes highlight technical aspects of conducting group therapy, provide the reader with often poignant, sometimes funny, and highly illustrative examples of various group phenomena, and bring to life what too often in our field is dryly presented. Dr. Fehr's communiction style challenges us, makes us laugh, take pause, reflect, and ultimately come away feeling revitalized in our work with groups. His review of the history of group therapy is the most compelling I have ever read. A must read for graduate students and senior group therapists alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars As a patient, reading it has made me understand it better., July 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
I have been a participent in the Group Therapy process for a long time. It has been both a painful and rewarding combination of experiences. Braving the expressed feelings of Group Members in response to my verbal output has opened me up to different options in facing my demons.

This book has made me feel that I understand my sleepless nights and difficult thoughts and put them in context so that I feel even more rewarded for not only having been part of it but for continuing this learning experience into the present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Dr. Fehr's Introduction to Group Therapy Book, June 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
I have just finished reading Dr. Fehr's wonderful book on group therapy. It is appropriate for both the beginning group therapist, the seasoned group therapist, and even for the group therapy client who wishes to know more about this effective treatment modality.

Dr. Fehr has written an excellent book which enriches both one's need for intellectual stimulation and one's need for emotionality. I personally found his book to be effective on both the intellectual and the emotional levels.

I highly recommend this book and plan to use it with all the practicum students and interns who train at my clinical training site.
