Clarity where clarity is sorely needed.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
Every once in awhile, a book comes along in our field that sheds new light on an important topic in a clear, understandable manner without diluting the information. Dr. Fehr's practical guide to group is one such example. He has provided something for everyone, from the beginning group therapist to the experienced clinician. His real life vignettes highlight technical aspects of conducting group therapy, provide the reader with often poignant, sometimes funny, and highly illustrative examples of various group phenomena, and bring to life what too often in our field is dryly presented. Dr. Fehr's communiction style challenges us, makes us laugh, take pause, reflect, and ultimately come away feeling revitalized in our work with groups. His review of the history of group therapy is the most compelling I have ever read. A must read for graduate students and senior group therapists alike.

I have been a participent in the Group Therapy process for a long time. It has been both a painful and rewarding combination of experiences. Braving the expressed feelings of Group Members in response to my verbal output has opened me up to different options in facing my demons. This book has made me feel that I understand my sleepless nights and difficult thoughts and put them in context so that I feel even more rewarded for not only having been part of it but for continuing this learning experience into the present.

Review of Dr. Fehr's Introduction to Group Therapy Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
I have just finished reading Dr. Fehr's wonderful book on group therapy. It is appropriate for both the beginning group therapist, the seasoned group therapist, and even for the group therapy client who wishes to know more about this effective treatment modality. Dr. Fehr has written an excellent book which enriches both one's need for intellectual stimulation and one's need for emotionality. I personally found his book to be effective on both the intellectual and the emotional levels. I highly recommend this book and plan to use it with all the practicum students and interns who train at my clinical training site.

This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
Dr. Fher's years of clinical and life experience plus his ability to sift through the complex and make sense of it is truly unique. This text is full of clear, relevant information for anyone who is curious at all about Group Psychotherapy. Students, practioners, group members, and referral agencies will benefit from accessing this compact resource. Dr. Fehr's sharing of his own experiences adds life and humor to material which sometimes can be dense. I highly recommend this text to any institute, training program, or practioners' important reference materials.

BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN,

This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide / 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I have just finished reading Dr. Scott Simon Fehr's Introduction to Group Therapy: A practical guide (2nd.Ed.)and was amazed on how much I enjoyed a text book. This book was given to me for a birthday present and even though I am a psychologist, I thought, "Why would someone give me a text book for my birthday?" After all I have been out of school for years but truly I am delighted this person did. This book was beautifully written with an engaging style that is seen in few text books and part of the engagement is due to Dr. Fehr putting himself out there and talking about his personal experiences running groups. It too is a funny book. I roar when I read his first group experience in a state psychiatric facility. Simply because I could identify and it brought back a flood of memories. Well done, Dr. Fehr

Great for both students and teachers of group therapy,

This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide (Advances in Psychology and Mental Health) (Hardcover)
Dr. Fehr's book was designed for students--and is laid out in a most convenient way for them--even with questions at the end of each chapter. But, as a teacher and long-time practitioner of group therapy, I found it to be engrossing, well presented, and helpful. There is one especially interesting chapter where several guest contributors each discuss the same case fragment from differing points of view. This book is an excellent addition to the libaries of both students and teachers of the art.

This review is from: Introduction to Group Therapy: A Practical Guide / 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This text is a very good alternative to the ubiquitous Yalom text:Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, Fifth Edition. Fehr writes in a much more concise fashion, with most chapters only 10-15 pages long. The book is split roughly evenly focusing in the the first half on models and empirical information and the second on practice advice and real world experience. Overall, Fehr presents a detail overview of the way group therapy should run, and how to do it as the beginning clinician. Excellent text for students. It should be noted, however, that Fehr writes from a strong psychodynamic perspective. Although he tries to embrace other approaches in some of the chapters, it comes through clearly in most chapters. Provided that doesn't turn you off the text too much, it is highly recommended.
