Book Description

April 17, 2006 0521480426 978-0521480420 2
A straightforward treatment describing the oxidation processes of metals and alloys at elevated temperatures. This second edition retains the fundamental theory but incorporates advances made in understanding degradation phenomena. The first half provides an authoritative introduction to the basic principles, covering thermodynamics and mechanisms of high temperature corrosion of metals and alloys. The latter half extends the discussion to oxidation processes in complex systems, from reactions in mixed environments to protective techniques, including coatings and atmosphere control. The authors provide a logical and expert treatment of the subject, producing a revised edition that will be a comprehensive guide to material scientists and engineers requiring an understanding of this elementary process.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Overall the book is very well presented...I would recommend this book for anyone coming to the subject for the first time as well as practising scientists for whom it's use as a brush-up to their knowledge and as the basis of many valuable references makes it a very valuable resource."
Dr. J.A. Little, Materials Characterization

"For the past twenty years, Birk's first edition has been the most important university textbook on the subject of high-temperature oxidation of metals. This new edition seems likely to continue to lead the field." --The Journal of Science and Engineering; Corrosion

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Book, December 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this textbook for background use in a graduate level high temperature corrosion class. The book does pretty good job of explaining corrosion phenomena with lots of pictures and discrete steps. I found it very helpful for learning the basics of an unfamiliar topic. I learn by example, and I think this book could use more numerical examples with concrete equations.

I would recommend pairing it with David Young's "High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals" for an awesome book combination to well learn about high temperature oxidation and corrosion reactions.
