Book Description

November 9, 2006 1418032956 978-1418032951 3
Expanded from 12 to 15 chapters, this edition of Introduction to Hydraulics & Hydrology continues to guide readers to an understanding of the concepts of hydraulics and surface water hydrology as they are used in everyday civil engineering practice. Valued as a reference by professional civil engineers, land developers, public works officials, and land surveyors throughout the U.S., this book is also an important tool for students in these disciplines. The book begins by acquainting readers with the principles of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, starting with fluid mechanics and progressing through pressure, flow, and energy considerations. In the expanded treatment of open channel flow, varied flow is presented, including backwater profiles and hydraulic jumps. Next, concepts of rainfall, runoff, and routing are fully explored and investigated. Finally, these concepts are applied to the solution of practical engineering problems, including: open-channel flow, orifice and weir flow, culvert flow and storm sewer design, culvert design, and detention basin design. A history of water engineering and discussion of the basic concepts of computation and design are included at the beginning of the book for the benefit of readers who may be new to this field. Clearly solved examples are also included throughout the book to assist readers in their efforts to apply theory to practice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to follow, March 2, 2010

This was recommended to me to help prepare for a PLS exam. Maybe this is easy to follow if you have a civil engineering background (although if that were the case, I'm not sure why you'd be interested in an "Introduction" to this subject), but the author makes numerous apparent leaps and assumptions and introduces unqualified variables that frankly make this extremely difficult for a non-engineer like me to follow, especially without the aid of an instructor to fill in the gaps or answer any questions. The end of chapter problems are useless, because there aren't any solutions provided, and the CD-Rom that contains them apparently costs around $200. So I'm still searching for a surveyor-friendly book on this subject, but I feel I can say without further qualification that this isn't it, so I'd say steer clear on this one and save yourself a considerable chunk of money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disorganised and lacking, April 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction To Hydraulics & Hydrology (Paperback)
This book is intended for people with little or no knowledge of hydraulics, however it assumes that the reader/learner knows more.

When you look at the texts out there this is actually somewhat better (not that that is good) than others.

The problems given make you refer to recent chapters written so the flow or organised/condensed chapters can throw a student off balance. Frequent references to the index(s) are needed but that is expected to a degree.

Most examples are not explained fully, again assumes the student is mid-level of knowledge of hydraulics. Several key elements from many examples are lacking important information to solve equations.

This is not an easy subject to grasp without the help of a quality teaching intructor, luckly I had one that cared enough to fill in the many gaps.
