1.0 out of 5 stars Get "Java Programming," by Joyce Farrell instead!, May 14, 1999

This review is from: Introduction to Java Programming: Developing Applets Using Microsoft Visual J++ (Paperback)
Unfortunately, I tried to use this book to complete a self-study intro to Java course. I was confident that this book would be fine because Course Technology (the publisher) had brought me such great programming instruction in Visual Basic and C++ (by Diane Zak). How could this be any different? The idea was great; a book that will teach experienced programmers how to build applets for use with web pages, but without teaching the whole language. In doing so, Stoker and Plew left out major information that is needed for comprehension of the language and made major errors in instructions for tutorials and exercises. Too bad, because adding a little bit of needed information wouldn't have made the book that much longer. I would recommend purchasing a different Course Technology book, "Java Programming," comprehensive version, by Joyce Farrell; it provides intro and advanced programming information and is a MUCH better book.

Additionally the trial version of J++ that comes with the book is full of bugs and frequently requires extraordinary steps be taken to get the program to run properly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Who Finds These People, March 16, 1999

Its seems like every day every person and their mother deside to write a how to computer book. This book did not show me anything that I couldn't discover on my own with trial and error. The Book Also Had To Man Errors..Plus The Trial Version of J++ Didn't work half the time.
