Using a fundamentals-first approach, Liang explores the concepts of problem-solving and object-oriented programming. Beginning programmers learn critical problem-solving techniques, then move on to grasp the key concepts of object-oriented and GUI programming using Java 5. Starts readers with essential problem-solving and programming concepts (control statements, methods, and arrays); moves on to object-oriented programming, graphical user interface (GUI), and applets; and finally introduces exception handling, binary I/O, and recursion. Enables readers to write short, interesting, graphical game programs early on (starting from Chapter 2). Offers an exceptionally broad range of carefully chosen examples; reinforces key concepts with objectives lists, introduction and chapter overviews, easy-to-follow examples, chapter summaries, review questions, programming exercises, and an interactive self-test. A useful reference for anyone interested in learning more about programming.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start..., July 31, 2007
This review is from: Introduction to Java Programming: Fundamentals First (6th Edition) (GOAL Series) (Paperback)
good for a start into programming with no experiance. easy to read. the book is geared to an old JBuilder version but you can skip those parts. the book does lack quite a bit when it comes to class methods but that what the java docs are for. this book give a intro into graphics which is hardly given enough info. It also covers the basics of applets. i would suggest getting the larger verison of this book that has more on gui i/o and data structures.

4 stars for easy reader basic info, and lacking more. you will need another book after this one.

(Bought from cilgor) I needed this book for class when I was a computer science major and I found it easy to follow. I've had other books that I prefer more but for a basic run down to Java, this was pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-organized and well-structured, good balance of length and detail, June 6, 2011

This review is from: Introduction to Java Programming: Fundamentals First (6th Edition) (GOAL Series) (Paperback)
I'm a computer engineering major, so I have experience programming (but not too much Java), and I bought this book to help with a summer project I embarked on to try to gain experience with Java. This book is the best I've seen as far as balancing difficulty and detail, and it's very well-organized. Another book I borrowed from a friend (Starting Out With Java) was big and heavy and spent a really long time on the very basic things and I had to read too much to learn anything useful. The Deitel book is very detailed and not structured in a logical way, so it's hard to look up how to do a particular thing. This book fixes both those problems, and I think I will be productive this summer. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who has no experience programming (although I wouldn't recommend Java in general for that), but for anyone who has even a little experience, there's enough basic introduction and has room to grow.
