Electrical Engineering Introduction to Laser Technology, Third Edition

Would you like to know how a laser works, and how it can be modified for your own specific tasks? This intuitive third edition-previously published as Understanding Laser Technology, First and Second Editions-introduces engineers, scientists, technicians, and novices alike to the world of modern lasers, without delving into the mathematical details of quantum electronics. It is the only introductory text on the market today that explains the underlying physics and engineering applicable to all lasers. A unique combination of clarity and technical depth, this book begins with an introductory chapter that explains the characteristics and important applications of commercial lasers worldwide. It proceeds with discussions on light and optics, the fundamental elements of lasers, and laser modification. The concluding chapters are composed of a survey of modern lasers, including:

  • Semiconductor lasers
  • Optically pumped solid-state lasers
  • Ion, HeNe, and HeCd lasers
  • Carbon dioxide lasers
  • Excimer lasers (codiscovered by J. J. Ewing)
  • Ultrafast and tunable lasers, OPOs

Introduction to Laser Technology, Third Edition is intended for those who are familiar with the principles of electro-optical technology, but possess limited formal training. This comprehensive treatment is essential, one-stop shopping for professionals, students, and non-engineer executives interested in the design, sales, or applications of the laser and electro-optics industry.

About the Author

About the Authors C. Breck Hitz is executive director of LEOMA, the Laser and Electro-Optics Manufacturers' Association. His areas of research include modelocking and nonlinear optics in solid-state lasers. Mr. Hitz was the founding editor of Lasers & Applications magazine (now Lasers & Optronics), and a former editor of Laser Focus. Over the past 20 years, he has taught the course based upon this book at leading American laser companies and corporate research laboratories.
J. J. Ewing has been a leading developer of new laser sources for over 25 years. His pioneering work on high-efficiency, ultraviolet lasers led to the discovery and development of the rare gas halide excimer lasers now used for eye surgery and for processing computer chips. Dr. Ewing is currently the president of Ewing Technology Associates, Inc., researching diode-pumped solid-state lasers for remote sensing applications and novel micro-discharge devices for point chemical detection sensors.
Jeff Hecht is a contributing editor to Laser Focus World and correspondent for New Scientist magazine. He was a confounder and contributing editor to Lasers & Applications and also served as managing editor of Laser Focus. Mr. Hecht is the author of 10 books, including Understanding Lasers, Understanding Fiber Optics, The Laser Guidebook, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, and Optics: Light for a New Age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best single source of information I have found on lasers, May 17, 2009
This review is from: Introduction to Laser Technology, 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
Around 2 months ago, this became the 4th book I purchased on the subject of lasers/optics since October; I was also given 2 other books by my committee advisor, and have poked through other resources in the library. As an engineering doctoral student--not a physicist--whose research includes the use of lasers, this book is by far the single best resource I have found. It doesn't grind you into boredom with too much underlying math, but rather emphasizes concepts and examples so you can quickly gain a solid intuitive foothold for understanding how lasers work.

If, like me, you find it necessary to drill deeper into the math, electromagnetics, and quantum theory, there are ample resources elsewhere to help you get there... this book allows you to focus on understanding how lasers work, and does so in an interesting and very readable way. My wife (whose background is childhood education, and doesn't consider herself technically oriented) started looking at the pictures and examples in the book and asking me questions about them... she usually has absolutely no interest in my engineering textbooks.

If I had to recommend a single book to start off with for someone with little or no background in laser technology, this would definitely be the one. I wish I had purchased this book first! It would have saved me a lot of time coming up to speed on the subject.
