5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what the title says
Make no mistake about it, this book will not make you an MPEG or Video compression expert. What it does, as its title says, is that it teaches the basics of what video compression is, why it is used, and how it is implemented. It covers the basics of compression techniques and all the processes an image must go through (DCT, zig-zag, etc). It doesn't go too far into...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good executive summary, but no technical details
This book gives an overview of MPEG technology that would be appropriate for a manager of a software development team who knows nothing about MPEG and wants to understand the terminology. It would not be useful as a technical reference to a developer. For example, the book will explain that H.264 compresses to about half the size of MPEG-1, but won't explain how the...

This review is from: Introduction to MPEG; MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (Paperback)

What it does, as its title says, is that it teaches the basics of what video compression is, why it is used, and how it is implemented. It covers the basics of compression techniques and all the processes an image must go through (DCT, zig-zag, etc). It doesn't go too far into details about each step of the process, but then again it's only an introduction.

This review is from: Introduction to MPEG; MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (Paperback)
This book gives an overview of MPEG technology that would be appropriate for a manager of a software development team who knows nothing about MPEG and wants to understand the terminology. It would not be useful as a technical reference to a developer. For example, the book will explain that H.264 compresses to about half the size of MPEG-1, but won't explain how the compression works. The whole book only takes a couple of hours to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Managers, June 12, 2008
This is a great book for managers and non technical folks trying to understand broadcast technology. The author explains technical concepts involved in a precise manner in simple English.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very preliminary introduction, March 17, 2008
This review is from: Introduction to MPEG; MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (Paperback)
This book is good for those who only want a very basic introduction. It is not too technical and not suitable for someone who wants to work with MPEG2 or MPEG4 software.
