This review is from: Introduction to Manufacturing Processes and Materials (Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Processing) (Hardcover)
Every other engineering and science book I have seen has used "rho" as the standard variable for density. This author uses "D". ALL the formula are like that. He just uses his own variable regardless of what the standard is. This is not only extremely annoying, this is also unacceptably for a scientist or engineer. This index makes the book extremely confusing to read and coupled with a poor index, it's practically useless as a reference.
The book rambles on in a poorly organized fashion with little regard for modern manufacturing practices. For example: He dedicates half a chapter to the economics of shaper machines. Haven't heard of them you say? That's because they stopped using those things in the 1920's in favor of the much faster and more precise milling centers! Or spending 2 chapters talking about how to calculate exactly how long a cutting bit will last when in reality a machinist will only use it until the wear starts to affect production time and them replace it.
The first couple chapters provide an interesting and fairly simple look at basic metallurgy. However the book does not talk about machining plastics, polymers or composites.
Illustration are few, which is sad because thy would really help what he is trying to explain. A lot of the ones that are there look like bad Xerox copies of catalogue pages. Others look like close ups from a cad program, complete with the blocky lettering. Then there ones that look like they were hand drawn.
Finally, the text in this book looks like it was written on a typewriter, combined with the very limited use of subscripts or superscripts in his seemingly arbitrary variables and equations, the book feels like one of my grandfathers books from the 40's. For a book that was only published in 1999, this is almost painful to look at.
