5.0 out of 5 stars Marty Friedman - 'Introduction' (Shrapnel), March 1, 2005
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
You learn something new every day.Well, you CAN anyway.Example, until here recently,I never knew that one-time Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman had solo material out.Heard this CD is much like his previous effort 'Scenes'.All I can say is great metal instrumental work here.Tracks I dug the most were "Escapism","Be" and "Loneliness".I put Friedman right UP there along with other outstanding guitar virtuosos like Vinnie Moore,Greg Howe,Joe Satriani and Tony MacAlpine.A great find.

5.0 out of 5 stars a true dichotomy........., December 14, 1999
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
I gave this to a friend of mine for x-mas and she calls back the next day raving about how good it was and I told her it was Megadeth's lead player and I got the standard reply of incredulity. I will combine two reviews into one and say that Introduction and Scenes are some of the most beautiful music produced and you should try it out because its incredible music that is highly expressive and there is not one vocal track on either album. I like to listen to them back to back because it sounds like they fit together. I'm also a big fan of jewel and sarah mclachlan and as far as weepy tear-jerking music goes they don't hold a candle to Marty. His music is slow, emotional, dreamy and yet dynamic. If you're looking for shredding this is the last place on earth you'll find it; it doesn't exist on either of these two albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!, November 13, 2004

This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
Wow! Marty Friedman is by far and away one of the greatest purveyors of instrumental albums of our time. I am a straight up headbanging fool when it comes to my tastes in music, and the classical piano interludes, woodwind instruments, symphony, and tympany drums just BLEW ME AWAY. This is beautiful music for all to appreciate. I now, finally, have everything Marty has put out because of this album. All are fantastic in their own right, but as a pure instrumental album, this mixes the electric lead breaks (my GOD this man can play), with the acoustic interludes and classical instruments. Each cut tells a story. Put on your headphones, lay back and ENJOY!

I thought that Neal Schon was the only rocker trying his hand at this type of instrumentals (Beyond Thunder, Electric World). Grab a brownie, some milk, your headphones & fly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of his best work, July 10, 2003

Stephan D. Mahler (Erie, PA United States) - See all my reviews

If you are wanting to go off the beaten path and settle into something that is dreamy,....I highly recommend this CD. Marty's playing on this album (aside from Scenes) is very focused. He is one of those sort of musicians who is talented beyond compare and very underated by a lot of what is mainstream. This is very influential material and if you listen to it especially while reading a good book or just relaxing, it will let your mind drift and open it up to other things.
I have this in my collection and listen to it constantly and it is just wonderful material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique kind of 'exotic', April 20, 2005
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
The 'exoticism' of 'Introduction' is so different even from its predecessor 'Scenes.' Marty Friedman just has so many facets to his musical abilities, that fact is just as inspiring as his actual playing.

This album is more 'laid back' than 'Scenes,' that's why I kinda like 'Scenes' more than 'Introduction.' But that is hardly a complaint. This is awfully wonderful music as well.

'Arrival' is rather straightforward, and I love the use of the augmented 5th chord here.

'Bittersweet' is probably the most emotionally heavy track in the CD. Wicked clean tone shredding though.

'Be' has some great bends, and the ending solo is so full of conviction.

'Escapism' has some great melodies, not just of the guitar either.

'Luna' is terribly exotic, and it doesn't help that there's that Japanese woman's voice in the middle. The melody sounds a lot like Rod Stewart's 'When I Need You' but Marty just does something to it that makes it so cornily, pervertedly wonderful and happy.

'Mama' and 'Loneliness' are very sad pieces in the key of B minor. His vibrato sounds so good.

'Siberia' is a good ending. Some heavy bass here.

Marty is conservative with his lead playing here. I am guessing this is the most improvised album of his with regards to soloing. They sound so raw and I could almost hear Marty wondering what his next phrase will be, especially in 'Escapism.'

Great music. It's more 'mature' than 'Scenes,' but there comes a 'boredom' with this. I don't mean 'boredom' like it being boring or dragging, but it's just so easy going. I highly recommend you to check this and 'Scenes' out for a wonderful new viewpoint of 'guitar' music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitar music treated like it should be, February 4, 1999
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
Marty Friedman is known for his incredibly fast fingers on the fret board of a guitar when he plays his thrash metal at Megadeth. The other side to Marty Friedman shows him as being a person who manages to excel brilliantly in transferring the deepest of sentiments into sound waves. He makes his guitar weep when the song is soulful and sad. There is a heavy Oriental touch to some of the songs, and it is overall an essential CD for the collection of a good music fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent instrumental album, May 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
First of all, the correct track listing of the album is as follows:

1. Arrival 2. Bittersweet 3. Be 4. Escapism 5. Luna 6. Mama 7. Loneliness 8. Siberia

This CD was the first Maarty Friedman CD of mine. I have heard "Bittersweet" and it was incredible. It was so melodic that I felt like I was listening melodies from heaven.

I couldn't find it in my home country so tried to search it on the internet. The track listing I found was the one given by amazon.com and that's why I have mentioned the listing here.

As you may know, Marty Friedman is Megadeth's guitarist but this album is far away from Megadeth's style. It sounds like classical music played by guitar, keyboard and drums. No vocals. My personal favorites are: "Bittersweet", "Be", "Loneliness". In fact all of the songs are very very good.

If you like melodic music I strongly recommend you this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another timeless masterpiece by a master of guitar and compositions, January 28, 2009

Cybersquatch (HOLIDAY FLORIDA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Introduction (Audio CD)
Man I never did write a review for this CD until now of course, after reviewing the SCENES CD everything I said on that review is duplicated here I tend to favor SCENES a tad bit only because it was the first of his in this similar style but now with the passing of time I am having a hard time choosing which I like better my conclusion is I like them both better!!! comparisons are normal in the music industry and in life and we all do it but I find myself loathing the the idea of comparing, let GREAT be GREAT end of story Marty is Great and his music is well deserving of the word "GREAT" an often overused adjective when describing music and various other things Marty Friedman's music here has stood and will keep standing the test of time because if it's "GREAT" in one era of history it's "GREAT" forever!!! And do as I said with this CD as I said at the end of my SCENES CD review!!! Everyone needs to here this, and I do mean EVERYONE!!!
