Well worth the money.,

This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) (Hardcover)
I own the 4th edition. I had to make a comment after amazon recommended the 5th.
This is a great book. Originally, i was PO'ed at the price. Especially when you get it and its quite thin compared to many texts. I had to get it for APICS. Once you start reading it you find it cuts through all waste. This is not a padded book. It explains concepts in a brief, direct manner. Most importantly it communicates clearly. Its like a well written executive summary of the field of materials management. There is enough detail for practitioners. I have almost all texts in the recommended reading of APICS. This is probably my favorite. The utility you will get per unit of time reading this is huge.

introduction to materials management,

This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book to use to study for the CPIM certification and it offers a great deal of information that isn't always shared in the classes. After taking many of the classes I have found that reading from the book one becomes much more prepared for the exams. This book is also a great read for improving one's skills as a production planner. I recommend this book for anyone aiming to work in the materials end of manufacturing. Henry Ford would have enjoyed this!

A good textbook,
This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) (Hardcover)
This book covers the basics of material management and goes into some quantitative detail as well. It is very well written and its lucid style is perfect for a beginner to get a grasp on the subject.
The author clearly and logically explains the concepts of production planning, master production schedule, MRP, Production and activity control, purchasing, inventory management, forcasting, demand planning and much more. The book also has an abundance of examples and exercises for the student to work through. It makes a good read as a beginner's textbook - but it is probably not very useful as a practical guide for the experienced professional.

gray out of figures,

This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (7th Edition) (Hardcover)
I bought the 6th Edition of this book. The problem is that all the figures are grayed out making them unreadable on the Kindle. As the text asks you to check the figures and follow along, it makes the kindle version a waste of your money.

a concise introduction to materials management,

This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (4th Edition) (Hardcover)
I think this is the right book to start studying materials management. Each chapter, written in an easy to read manner, offers a great deal of systematically classified information on every aspect of production planning and control. I suggest reading the book with the accompanying case book, which also covers lots of useful material though with some typographical errors. If chapters were outlined in more detail with subsections it would help facilitate a clearer understanding and enable following up points of reference more easily. I and my students found it both useful and enjoyable in class.

It worked for passing the first CPIM test.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (5th Edition) (Hardcover)
I bought this because it is a suggested study item for passing the first exam in the CPIM series of exams. I passed the first exam using this book and the APICS exam manual. I should say that my score was barely passing but I studied for 12 hours the night before the exam while I was at a campsite. So I attribute my lackluster performance to my own study habits and not to the books I purchased. It worked for its intended purpose and I wouldnt have passed without it.

Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to get too excited over a textbook about materials management. That being said, if you need to know materials management, I can't imagine a better place to start. It's the definitive work from everything I've seen and been told about. Good luck to everyone out there studying for their APICS certifications.

WAY too little information.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction to Materials Management (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
Many reviews of this book have raved of it's ability to be brief in the explanation of material. I found this brievity to be extremely frustrating and overall an extremely poor way of writing a text book. While the authors did an Ok job of showing sample problems, its explanation of any information beyond that was poor and incomplete. Unfortunately, anyone looking to buy this book for a college course will find themselves discouraged with the lack of material.
