Not very good for coding,
This review is from: Introduction to Matlab 7 for Engineers (Paperback)
Although this book has a lot of pertinent information to engineers, I bought it with the intent of learning the fundamentals of coding in MATLAB. I have a class in which our teacher assigns problems in MATLAB, but none of the students have experience in MATLAB. I bought the book to help me figure out how to write codes and it doesn't do that too well, but I could see how it might work well for someone familiar with MATLAB who needs to use it for an engineering problems.

This is an introductory book on MATLAB for engineers. There is a section on problem solving in Chapter 1. This is followed in Chapter 2 and 3 by matrix operations, and files, functions, and data structures. Programming, plotting, and model building are discussed in Chapters 4 and 5. Solving linear algebraic equations is presented in Chapter 6. This is followed in Chapter 7 by statistical functions and interpolaton. Chapter 8 teaches calculus and differential equations. Finally, computer algebra with the symbolic math toolbox is discussed in Chapter 9. The examples presented are diverse from various branches of engineering. However, if you are just beginning to learn MATLAB, check the book "MATLAB for Beginners: A Gentle Approach."

Had to buy this for MATLAB class. The bookstore on campus sold it for almost twice as much. It is a paperback edition. Great deal. Great price! Several good examples. The book made me a MATLAB guru really. Actually, more of the assignments in class that made me a guru. The book has great examples and very informative.

MatLab 7 for Engineers,
This review is from: Introduction to Matlab 7 for Engineers (Paperback)
Almost completely the same as MatLab6 for Engineers no need to buy the new book if you have the previous edition. But does a good job of covering the scope of MatLab.

Palm demonstrates the simple versatility of Matlab. Many examples are given that are likely to be encountered by an undergrad engineering student. Matrix methods might be the most useful, given the prevalence of linear systems that you often have to solve.
Matlab can also be used for symbolic algebra. Here the usage may be a bit more specialised. While this can be neat to use, chances are that most engineers will rarely have to use this ability, relative to number crunching. The book only briefly covers Matlab's probability and statistics functions. It covers the bell curve [normal distribution]. But doesn't really go into anything advanced. Still, remember the book is only meant as an introduction.

I used this for my computing engineering class. It's a pretty helpful book but sometimes the explanation is a bit droning and you get lost. Not so many good memories from this book, but if you look for what you need you'll probably find it

The content is very effectively edited and presented. The material covers all one needs to know in order to solve various problems and exploit several powerful features of MATLAB. Very good introductory text.
