Book Description

January 28, 1994 0521426650 978-0521426657 1
Neuroendocrinology is a multidisciplinary subject on the interaction between the brain and endocrine system and the influence of this interaction on the behavior of animals and humans. This book is designed as an introductory text in neuroendocrinology. It outlines the basics of endocrinology, including the endocrine glands, the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus, and their interactions. It also describes the action of neurotransmitters in the nervous system, the action of neuropeptides as chemical messengers, and the interaction among hormones, neurotransmitters, and neuropeptides. It also introduces the important new field of neuro-endocrine-immunology and contains a chapter on behavioral neuroendocrinology. The level of presentation is suitable for undergraduates who have completed introductory biology or psychology classes, and each chapter contains review questions based on material in that chapter and essay questions for further in-depth study.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the first introductory work to be published for an advanced undergraduate and/or beginning graduate reader...Brown has done a masterful job of presenting material in such a way that beginning students can appreciate and comprehend the broad scope of neuroendocrinology, while more advanced students are free to explore its more intricate details..." D.M. Senseman, Science & Technology

"...produces valuable insights into controversial issues....an excellent overview of the state-of-the-art in neuroendocrinology. An Introduction to Neuroendocrinology explains key concepts, methodologies, and findings in this complex and rapidly developing field. Written in a clear, direct expository style, this book is likely to delight undergraduates. Advanced graduate students are likely to find useful references in the well-balanced presentation of this diverse, multidisciplinary field. Brown has also done a superb job of providing the nonspecialized reader with an authoritative, exceptionally readable overview of how hormones, the brain, and behavior interact with one another." Mei-Fang Cheng, Bioscience

"...a useful book for introductory students in the neurosciences." David H. Sarne, Doody's Annual, 1994-95

"...a very useful book. It brings together a wealth of neuroendocrine information and is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source for this, of which I am aware." Paul E. Cooper, Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences

Book Description

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but needs updated, February 11, 2004
By
Angela (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Introduction to Neuroendocrinology (Paperback)
I bought this book for a graduate course called Neuroendocrinology. While the textbook is easy to understand, complete with diagrams to illustrate main points crucial to neuroendocrinology, the book is outdated. It needs to be revamped: the pictures need to be put in color (we're in the 21st century now, come on) and recently developed techniques as well as the research from those techniques need to be included. The publishers need to work on it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction in plain English, May 14, 2006
This review is from: An Introduction to Neuroendocrinology (Paperback)
This book is exactly what I was looking for: a simple, accessible introduction to basic neuroendocrinology, written by someone who has experience of what beginning learners need and how to present it to them. Once I have finished this book, I will move on to more complex and more up-to-date texts. But this book will have given me the foundation on which to build.

My purpose in pursuing this subject is probably atypical from the medical and biology students. My wife has a complex of medical conditions with multiple diagnoses in the area of neuroendocrinology, and most likely more diagnoses yet to come. Most of the advances we have made have been via my research on the internet and studying medical textbooks. My interest is not theoretical and professional, but personal and pragmatic. I need to understand neuroendocrinology in order to model this very complex system in silico, as a computer scientist, to better understand it and to better guide her to reliable diagnoses and more effective treatment.

Had this book been updated in the last few years, I would have given it five stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly out of date, February 20, 2006
This review is from: An Introduction to Neuroendocrinology (Paperback)
If my prof hadn't written this book I am sure we wouldn't be using it. We have the benefit of new figures that have been created in the past ten years. Anyone else that uses this book needs their head examined.
