Book Description

October 1, 1999
Most New Testament introductions on the market take the "survey" approach or the "method" approach—both unsatisfactory. Puskas offers a new format. He describes the New Testaments historical setting, explains basic critical tools, and introduces the diverse strands that contributed to the formation of early Christianity. Students who master these three essentials will be equipped to understand the New Testament, confidently assess critical theories about it, and construct their own analyses.

"The author of this work has undertaken a formidable task and accomplished it in a masterful and quite balanced fashion, with a firm stamp of scholarly integrity. This is truly an introduction to the New Testament, with emphasis on the kind of world in which it took shape.

"The breadth of its topical coverage, combined with a strong bibliographic support base, makes this work an academic time-saver for both teachers and students. The former need not spend time on transmitting data that are now readily accessible within the covers of one book, and the latter will find their class hours more productive through exploration of problems and issues raised by Dr. Charles Puskas. The total effect is one of being taken into the author's own workshop, where all is patiently but unpatronizingly presented. I recommend this book not only for textbook use by college or seminary students, but also to anyone who simply wishes to be better informed about the New Testament, its origins, its literary forms, its reading publics, and its history of transmission, including modern texts and translations. I found especially interesting Puskas's discussion of dramatic features in the Gospels."
—Frederick W. Danker

"The major weakness with most introductions to the NT is that they do not provide their readers with enough background information to understand the milieu in which the sacred writers wrote. Puskas has certainly not fallen into this error. Most of his introduction studies the various religious, cultural and literary influences on the NT. Puskas has a thorough acquaintance with the significant secondary literature and makes a genuine effort to be non-sectarian. Teachers will delight in his imaginative presentation which leads the reader, step by step, into a deeper appreciation of the nature and content of the individual message of each NT author."
—Robert F. O'Toole, S.J.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This second edition of An Introduction to the New Testament by Puskas and Robbins is a literarily sensitive, historically oriented volume. It provides a framework to the New Testament that will help readers appreciate the complex world out of which the New Testament arose and gain an understanding of what is involved in the exegesis of New Testament texts today. I recommend this text for use in undergraduate and seminary classes that offer an academic approach to the New Testament. --Mark Reasoner, Associate Professor of Theology, Marian University --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
