5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear overview, September 2, 2008

This review is from: Introduction to Philosophical Hermeneutics (Yale Studies in Hermeneutics) (Paperback)
I found this overview of hermeneutics to be very useful in understanding the topic. The book covers the concept of hermeneutics and interpretation as it evolved over time (including pre-hermeneutics before it was called by the name.) Seeing how each new thinker added to the conceptualization of hermeneutics helped me to fully understand the conteporary theories in a way I had not been able to with other things I that have read.

The author was clear. When I was not familiar with the more academic words such as propaedeutic, once I looked up the definition I had no trouble understanding what the author was saying. This is not always the case with academic writing, and in this sense I feel the text was written in a simple and clear way. (google's define: command is excellent for looking up academic terms)

The only chapter I struggled with was the one on Heidegger, but once the author moved on to Gadamaer I had no further difficulties. This is not a how to book on hermeneutics, but it does explain why heremeneutics is not about a how to approach.
