Book Description

July 31, 2006 0323032842 978-0323032841 3rd
This comprehensive text provides a thorough and realistic overview of both the profession and the practice of physical therapy. The first half of the book introduces readers to key aspects of a career in physical therapy, such as physical therapy roles, practice settings, the APTA, and laws, policies, and regulations. The second half describes the practice of physical therapy, detailing the functions, disorders, and therapies of the major organ systems. Visually appealing, this text includes both classic photos that illustrate the history of the profession, as well as practical photos that demonstrate current physical therapy procedures.
  • This is the only introductory textbook to include an overview of both the profession and the clinical practice of physical therapy and physical therapy assisting.
  • Each chapter offers helpful learning tools, including a chapter outline, key terms, learning objectives, questions to ask, boxes, tables, summaries and up to date references, suggested readings, and review questions.
  • Features the latest information on current trends in health care and the profession of physical therapy such as laws and regulations, reimbursement, the roles of the PTA and PT, new terminology, and key concepts.
  • A new chapter on reimbursement introduces readers to the administrative side of physical therapy practice and its effect on the profession.
  • A new chapter on communication and cultural competence explores how cultural differences can influence patient behavior and interaction.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a difficult read, January 19, 2012
This review is from: Introduction to Physical Therapy, 3rd Edition (Paperback)
I'm taking an intro to Physical Therapy class, this is the required text and I have now read 4 of the chapters. I've found it strangely disorganized. For example, on a section about physical therapy aides the information isn't really about aides, but skirts around the premise that aides are not to perform interventions. Maybe there is confusion in the field about the use of aides as I am still confused after reading this section in the book. Some of the information presented doesn't feel complete and then you read in a later chapter something that helps with clarification. I find myself reading the text two or three times to pull the important information out as it is scattered here and there without a recognizable structure or logical flow of information to the chapters. Some of this may be due to the fact that each chapter is written by a different contributer. Lots of beaurocratic information about the profession which I imagine will be useful, but is difficult to digest.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Introduction to Physical Therapy, 3rd Edition (Paperback)
While I would have bought the fourth edition my professor said that he required this third edition. I am curious as to what things might have been added or changed between editions. Overall i am excited to be getting this and starting my Physical Therapy Assistant program.
