Many examples, few statements of clear theory,

Althought the book contains number of very ineresting examples I would have prefered if Ross stated the underlying theory more clearly. Often, I had hard time finding the theory in the text. On the other hand, for practical purposes, if you can find the example that matches your practical problem this book will have the some form of the solution derived for it.

Take "Introduction To" out of the title,

This was my first course in stochastics and this book was horrible to start with. I learned all the material from other study guides which used easier examples and were written in english. If you're looking for an introduction to stochastics forget this book, if you've had some previous experience it will probably do quite well.

Disappointing Book!,
By brian hannon (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Introduction to Probability Models, Sixth Edition (Hardcover)
This is probably the worst textbook I have read in my life. Each chapter basically consists of numerous solved problems. There is almost no explanation of the basics of probability theory and how one should go about solving these problems. Needless to say, I had to concurrently read two other textbooks to understand the material. This is more of a book of problems than an introductory textbook.

Well written, but tough.,

This review is from: Introduction to Probability Models, Sixth Edition (Hardcover)
This book is not intended for beginners in the field. Yet this book is suitable for those who have had solid background in mathematical statistics and calculus. Also, many of the examples and excercises are difficult to solve. Hence, I would recommend this book to be used as a textbook.

Great book!,

Contains many good worked examples. The text is well written. Some of the introductory material is covered very lightly (for example Moment Generating Functions), but I believe Ross does a better job than others. Other topics, such as Poisson processes and Markov chains are covered in depth. |
