Dennis Coon presents psychology in a way readers will find fascinating, relevant, and above all, accessible. The first author to integrate the proven SQ4R active learning system (survey, question, read, recite, relate, and review) into a psychology textbook, Coon helps readers grasp major concepts, develop a broad understanding of psychology's diversity, and see for themselves how psychology relates to the challenges of everyday life. The author delights in sparking readers' curiosity, insights, imagination, and interest, and makes his investment in the subject of psychology apparent on every page. Coon effectively presents the latest research, the most vital controversies, and key scientific content in an involving way that gets students "hooked" on psychology and eager to read on. Because readers become actively involved with the material, they develop a basic understanding of psychology that they take with them into their future courses and careers. In a course where professors are frequently confronted by students who haven't actually read their textbooks, Coon's text offers a solution that students will want to read.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"…Very engaging. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen many texts that measure up to it. ...There is something for every student. Those more keen on research have the focus on research boxes. Those who look for more application have the previews and clinical file boxes. For the visual learner, there is adequate inclusion of statistical tables and illustrations. The knowledge builders contained within each chapter are good for students who do not buy study guides, but could use the direction for review of material."

"...I find the chapters to be organized very well. The transitions are smooth and very logical. Again, I believe that many of the examples given are extraordinarily pithy."

"...Almost effortlessly, the student learns about psychological research and theory because the writing style is so fluid and personable."

"The structure and flow of the text is easy to follow for the first-time college student, or for the returning college student who is juggling a career, a family, and classes. Easy-to-follow ideas and review sections make keeping up in class less stressful."

"Coon does a great job at introducing students to psychology's theoretical concepts while developing familiarity with psychological terminology." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Very good condition and arrived in a timely manner. I would have liked to have known it did not have all the accompanying materials like CD and concept maps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but very basic, April 2, 2006
This review is from: Introduction to Psychology: Gateways to Mind and Behavior (with Gateways to Psychology: Visual Guides and Technology Tools and InfoTrac) (Hardcover)
A good but very basic and superficial introduction to the field. I would prefer to see some topics explored more in-depth.
