Book Description

A clear understanding of today's sales tax laws is important to your online business; it not only keeps you out of trouble with the tax man, but it also helps boost your bottom line. Consider the following questions. Do all 50 states collect sales tax? If not, which ones don't? What is Nexus? And what constitutes Nexus? In which states does Amazon have nexus? Do I, therefore, have nexus in those states? All these, and more, will be answered in this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful info, but not enough to justify the price October 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I hate to leave negative reviews, so let's call this one neutral. (I purchased the Kindle version of this book.)

The GOOD: links to the state taxing authorities and information on how to fill out the sometimes confusing applications. THIS is good information that is useful to the seller.

The BAD: ambiguous and imprecise terminology. Example: you don't have to direct Amazon to "collect" sales tax on your behalf. This implies (but does not state precisely) that (as a Texas Resident, for example) if I buy an item from Seller A, they collect sales tax because seller A has marked the item as taxable, and if I buy an item from Seller B, who has not bothered to mark the item as taxable (same item) then I don't have to pay sales tax. That is not what happens. This would start up a whole new industry of "let's find the seller who doesn't collect sales tax and buy from him." As a Texas resident, Amazon is going to collect the sales tax from me when I make a purchase. Whether they remit it to the seller is another story, which seems to require the payment of a fee. I find this reprehensible, if true (not the authors' fault). Perhaps all that happens is that the sales tax is remitted to the seller, but the reports aren't generated without payment. I don't know because I was unable to find out (see next paragraph). I find that Amazon also uses the terminology "collect" ambiguously in their help pages, but that is something these authors should have pointed out.

The book also doesn't state anywhere that I could find that this link to marking items as taxable and managing one's sales tax information is only available if you are a professional seller - i.e. you pay the $39.99 per month.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short book but worth the money! September 11, 2012
By Marty
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
To think I was concerned about filing and paying sales tax in my resident state if I began selling items via Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA.) I had no idea I could also be liable in every state in which Amazon has a tax nexus. This was a short book but well worth the money to discover what requirements would be involved in such an endeavor. The book also provides information about how to obtain permits and file sales taxes in the major states involved, including samples of forms and contact information. There's not even a hint of this information in other books I've read about selling items by FBA. And there's not a wealth of similar sales tax information easily available online either. I'm glad that I downloaded this book on my Kindle. It was crucial in my decision about whether or not to sell items through Amazon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should be a blog post, not a book October 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I can probably summarize this entire book into a short review. Do you nee to collect sales tax in states which Amazon has a presence? Yes. What are those states? AZ, CA, DE, GA, IN, KS, KT, MI, NJ, NV, NH, ND, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV (some of those having no sales tax).
The author gives a quick breakdown of the application forms for each state. This would be somewhat valuable if you're going to register for all of those states, but I think most people who are going to do that will have a very qualified accounting team who this book isn't really aimed at.
Overall, there's no bad information or anything in the book, but information like this is normally given away for free in blogs, personal websites, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree with all the 5 star reviews September 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I cannot tell you how much this book helped me tackle a scary, confusing and getting no clear answer from amazon issue....I totally needed it....the links are spot on...and the advice....I love that the forms for each state were added and filled out so i could check them if i didn't know what to do.
The one star reviews are wrong and completely unfair. This book is the only place i found the answers i needed...
I am so grateful...if you sell to amazon FBA you NEED this book. I had no idea where to turn nor did amazon really help me...I sent endless seller support pleas for help...and was directed to that even more confusing FBA matter what i asked for...This book helped me see that i can take things one step at a time... set things up and then get better help when i needed it...I so appreciate it

Michael Rice is a noted Tax Expert, and does a good job of explaining the issues involved in this complex issue.
The book also has many examples of the forms used to make it even easier.
Michael Rice is also available for specific advice, and is a fantastic resource, and knows how to explain things in down-to-earth English, not in legalese.

Thanks Michael for a job well done!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worth more like 99 cents or $1.99 May 26, 2014

This book is way overpriced, and i wish I would have been able to return it. I finished it in about 20-25 minutes. I expected it to give me a complete overview of fba tax related issues. Instead it just gives some brief info here in and there. You will need the full help of an accountant after reading this book. The few questions that are mentioned in the book description are officially answered in one or two pages. The rest is just documents and other stuff.
I really thought this would help me get the info, but it was a complete waste of money.
