Book Description

May 2005
A step-by-step fly tying guide designed specifically for the novice and the intermediate tyer is now available. Introduction to Saltwater Fly Tying provides a carefully crafted presentation of everything you need to know to get started and begin tying flies that are sure to bring results.

Ever since man created a fly with fur and feathers to catch trout, there has been a struggle between two schools of flytiers. One school seeks to create a fly that is simple, easy to tie, and will roughly resemble the insect the trout are feeding on. Time-tested flies such as the Royal Coachman and Quill Gordon fall into this category. The other school seeks to create a fly exactly like the insect, so lifelike that it will seem to fly off the vice. More often this type of fly doesn't end up being a great fish taker. For more than four centuries this friendly debate has incited creativity. In recent times, another school has emerged that blends the two schools' characteristics: flies that are more lifelike and catch their share of fish. Scott Sanchez's flies fall into this new third school. As you read this book, you'll create some exciting saltwater flies and get to know one of the finest fly craftsmen in the field today.

About the Author

Scott started fly fishing and fly tying at the age of 12. He grew up in Salt Lake City and tried his self-taught fly fishing skills on the trout of the Wasatch front. Fortunately, these fish were forgiving of novice abilities. With a borrowed vise, he immersed himself into fly tying and started catching fish on his own creations made from a combination of road kill, Mom's sewing box and some actual tying materials. At 14 he taught his first fly tying class.

Scott has worked in the fly fishing industry for twenty-two years. This includes being assistant manager at Jack Dennis Sports, tying flies commercially, helping with video and book production for Snake River Books, guiding, consulting work for Dan Bailey's, working at the Austin Angler and being the Texas rep for Scott Rods. He is featured in the video Understanding Fly Tying Materials; and has done fly tying demonstrations as well as slide shows, fly tying and fly fishing instruction. He has written numerous articles and sold photos to American and Japanese publications, and his flies have been featured in many books and magazines. Scott has been the featured guide on national TV programs. He is now the wholesale manager at Dan Bailey's. He has been around the Jackson Hole One Fly Contest since the beginning, and his Double Bunny has won the prestigious event three times. This fly is now responsible for over thirty species. Scott is in demand at One Fly time for his bombproof flies. Many consider him to one of the more innovative tyers, and he draws a crowd whether he is tying fishing flies or a deer hair Bugs Bunny. Scott is a member of the Scott Rods Pro Staff. He has twenty years of experience fishing the Greater Yellowstone area. He has fly fished for numerous species in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, Texas, Belize, California, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Brazil and France.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tying Book, December 4, 2007
This review is from: Introduction to Salt Water Fly Tying (Hardcover)
This is an excellent tying book for beginning, or "new to" saltwater experienced tyer. It is well written, and easy to read. The author goes through a logical progression of flies, so that the beginning tyer builds techniques and skills. I would have liked a more expanded section on the tying materials, but overall it's a top-notch book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Saltwater Fly Tying, May 12, 2007
This review is from: Introduction to Salt Water Fly Tying (Hardcover)
Well, this book is just what it says, an introduction. For any tyer that is just starting to tie saltwater flies this book is excellent. I goes into great detail on tying methods, which actually the beginner does need. I've been tying for almost 30 years now and still found this book interesting. A great book to have in any tyers collection.
Thanks
