Editorial Reviews

Review

What Colleagues are Saying: "The text offers a nice balance of the coverage of the material regarding social work and social welfare." -- Barrett Michelle Horton, University of Tennessee at Martin "The cases are helpful in allowing the students to understand the application piece of practice. The cases are at the beginning of each of the chapters dealing with an area of practice in Social Work and it gives the student a glimpse of what social workers do and the versatility of the profession." -- Barrett Michelle Horton, University of Tennessee at Martin "I quite liked the first section "Introduction" because it really introduces a beginning level student to the profession of social work. The "distinguishing characteristics" summarize almost all components of the social work profession. I also like the fact that a variety of fields of practice are discussed in the third section titled "Social Work Services"." -- Anita Sharma, University of Louisiana "I like the design and formatting of the text. I also like the fact that relevant information is highlighted, the examples stand out, and the formatting is easy to follow." -- Anita Sharma, University of Louisiana "The textbook provides good historical as well as contemporary perspectives on social work which helps students to have a clear understanding of the profession. It emphasizes in the current generalist practice perspectives and answers students' questions about social work and their social work education." -- Saman Yaghmaee, San Diego Community College --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Providing a broad overview of the field and profession of social work, this book stresses the link between professional education and practice. It offers both a historical perspective on the development of social work and current social work practice paradigms, with special consideration of current social problems. The introductory theoretical base of the text highlights the trend toward the generalist perspective and model of practice. Part I provides a historical and theoretical context for social work, including its relationship to other social services. Part II discusses social work practice with individuals, groups, and communities, including case work, administration, and research. Social work services are discussed in Part III, including the role of social work in mental health, health care, the public schools, public welfare, child and family services, Social Security, the correctional system, the workplace, and working with the aged. Areas receiving special attention include drug abuse, work with minorities, and social work in rural areas. Part IV covers professional development, including the current focus on prevention and future opportunities. For anyone considering social work as a profession or interested in a current overview of the field. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The 11th edition is easy to read helpful for tests and full of information.
Definitely a lot cheaper! I would chose quality over quantity, and just because
it has some pictures does not mean it is a great value!

Great Book! Simple but at the same same time uses great examples for the comparisons of the terms studied in the book!

I needed this book for my intro to social work class, the book itself is not a very visually appealing, but it is full of information. There are no bold terms and bullet points tend to be whole paragraphs, but there is a summery section at the end of each chapter. To study for tests and find key terms quickly it is almost necessary to high-light or underline.
