Book Description

This revised edition of Tischler's INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY continues a tradition of providing a proven and comprehensive textbook to students and professors at a lower, very reasonable price. With its built in study guide, practice tests, and available access to SociologyNow, no other textbook on the market provides students with a complete suite of study aids at an affordable price as INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY. Tischler is known for providing full coverage of sociological concepts in a student-friendly manner, and threading two basic ideas throughout the text- 1) sociology is a rigorous, scientific discipline and 2) a basic knowledge of sociology is essential for understanding social interaction in many work and social settings. Each chapter progresses from a specific to a general analysis of society - each part introducing increasingly comprehensive factors necessary for a broad-based understanding of social organization.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Henry Tischler?s Introduction to Sociology continues its tradition of providing a comprehensive and affordable textbook. With so many introductory texts moving in the direction of being more theoretically partisan, Tischler?s text resists this and provides an eclectic text with broad appeal. For departments considering using a common text, I see no better text on the market than this one."

"I believe that Dr. Tischler does a good job of covering the foundational material appropriate to an Introduction to Sociology course, and he writes in a manner that is accessible to students at the beginning (freshman) level."

More About the Author

As a freshman at Temple University, my first experience with a college textbook was in my sociology course. I dutifully read the assigned chapter during my first week of class hoping to become familiar with the subject matter of this required course. The only problem was that I had no idea what the author was saying. The writing level was advanced, the style dense, and the book downright threatening, without photos or illustrations. After several hours of reading I felt frustrated and stupid, and I knew no more about sociology than when I started.
If this was what college was going to be like, I was not going to make it, I thought. I remember admitting reluctantly that I was probably not what guidance counselors in that day referred to as "college material." I could picture myself dropping out after the first semester and looking for a job selling furniture or driving a cab. My family would be disappointed, but my father was a factory worker, and there was no family history of college attendance to live up to. I continued to struggle with the book and earned a D on the mid-term exam. After much effort, I managed to finish the course with a C, and a burning disinterest in the field of sociology. I did not take another sociology course for two years, and when I did it was "Marriage and the Family," considered the easiest course on campus.
I often wonder how I came from this inauspicious beginning to become a sociology professor, let alone the author of a widely used introductory sociology textbook. Then again, maybe it is not all that unusual, because that experience continues to have an effect on me each day. Those 15 weeks helped to develop my view that little is to be gained by presenting knowledge in an incomprehensible or unnecessarily complicated way, or by making yourself unapproachable. Pompous instructors and intimidating books are a disservice to education. Learning should be an exciting, challenging, and eye-opening experience, not a threatening one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great introductory book, June 14, 2000

Michael Hale (California, USA) - See all my reviews
Henry Tischler does a marvelous job writing this book. It is both up-to-date and accurate, blending a myriad of graphs and pictures with easy to read text. It is definitly recomended for the serious student interested in sociology as well as the student taking sociology to meet a GE requirement. It does a marvelous job touching each aspect of sociology, both macro and micro. I highly recomend it for possible sociology major and anybody just wishing to gain a greater understanding of this science.

5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book for the CLEP Exam, April 14, 2007
This review is from: Introduction to Sociology (Paperback)
In addition to the exam study guide through the College Board, this book was my primary study material for the Intro to Sociology CLEP Exam. Of 100 questions, I only ran across 3-4 that covered material not in the book. Note: I think Tischler focused really well on concepts, but not as well on contributors to the science. Accordingly, I spent additional time on Wikipedia for some of the bigger names associated with Socioligy (ie, Cooley, Mead, Weber, etc). Overall, it was an informative read and I feel like I came away with a comprehensive handle on the major concepts of the field. (PST: I passed the exam with flying colors!)
