FROM THE REVIEWS:
ZEITSCHRIFT FUR PHYSIKALISCHE CHEMIE
"…the textbook is an excellent introduction into most fields of modern solid state theory and may be recommended to…graduate students in physics and material sciences as well as researchers in the field of solid state physics.”
PHYSICALIA
"…the book is remarkably well articulated and its organization is crystal-clear…Because this book requires a good-knowledge of quantum mechanics and also some prior knowledge of the most important solid-state phenomena, we shall recommend it to advanced graduate students or researchers, having already been introduced to the solid-state physics. They shall find in it a systematic introduction of the concepts of solid-state theory, presented in a unified way, that is illuminating from many points of view.”

This review is from: Introduction to Solid-State Theory (Springer Series in Solid State Sciences) (Hardcover)
Ignore the "Introduction" in the title. Madelung's book is an advanced description of condensed matter physics, circa 1978. He wastes no time over elementary quantum mechanics. To give you some idea, the Hartree-Fock approximation is quickly dealt with in the first chapter, in a mere 6 pages.
Later chapters progressively add on more interactions. Giving quasi-electrons and plasmons. Second quantisation is used to provide a simple modelling of interactions. From the electron-hole interaction in semiconductors, the phenomenon of excitons is explained. While the ion-ion interaction gives phonons. Semiconductor optics should interest some readers. The basis of solid state lasers. He describes electron-photon and phonon-photon interactions. The reader should be at the level of a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate, at least. More typically, perhaps a graduate student.

Madelung Solid-state theory,

This review is from: Introduction to Solid-State Theory (Paperback)
The book by Ashcroft and Mermin provides definitely a more didactic introduction into this subject.
