*Excellent* stats book for behavioral researchers,
By
This review is from: An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis (Hardcover)
We used this as our primary textbook in a graduate psychology / consumer behavior research methods / data analyis class, and I found it to be an invaluable aid in statistical analysis. From simple measures such as z-scores, t-tests & f-tests, and chi-squares, to more in depth methods such as GLM, ANOVA, and regression, this book is clear and concise. While it can be slightly cursory at times as to the theoretical underpinnings underneath the data analysis methods being used, it is a very helpful book in understanding how to actually make the methods work, and more importantly, knowing which method to apply in which situation.Untill Prof. Lattin releases his statistical analysis book for behavioral students, Ott's book is the #1 stat resource on my bookshelf.

the book is very good on application, no proofs, which is fine since the book doesn't try to be all things, BUT i am a bit disappointed at the number of typos for a book in its 5th ed. i'm just finishing the 4th chapter (skipping ch 1 & 2, so basically i've only read 2 chapters so far) for a class and have found the number of typos in the exercises to be quite annoying (especially for a text in its 5th edition!).
the text exercises make heavy use of prior exercise such as 4.xxx says see the prior exercises and that exercise says see another exercise ... is tolerable, but when in the course of chaining exercises one exercise references an exercise in error you start scratching your head and quickly become annoyed. also, the students solution manual, which has been very helpful, is sometimes provides the different graph than requested in the text. eg. the text ask you to create a histogram and the solutions manual uses a normal probability graph. this isn't too big a deal, but it leaves you with the impression that changes were made to say the text exercises, but not updated in the solutions manual. again, a good book, especially for those with minimal math background, but for the cost of the text and being in its 5th ed, the number of typos is a bit annoying.

Just okay.,
This review is from: An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis (Kindle Edition)
This stats book was helpful in some chapters, but very confusing in others. I am a straight-A student & had to turn to other internet-based resources to supplement the information in this book. Even my professor decided he was going to ditch this book next year after using it in his class for only 2 semesters.

this book is amazing good. although lack of proofs, the application side of the book is immense. Toones of good real life examples and things are explained in a very clear and simple way. Very easy to understand and in great details.
Must buy if you really interested in the application side of statistical methods which everyone should.

Great intro stat book,

I borrowed this book from the library and am now starting to like it. It is similar to another book of Ott&Longnecker, A First Course in Statistical Methods, but extends beyond it. It seems a thick book but the authors made some good points about what to look for when analyzing data. I can often relate their points to problems I encountered when analyzing real data. Also, the book does not require much prior knowledge on linear algebra, and the authors tried very hard to explain things in a way easier for general readers to understand. At least I felt like I learned something while reading it, and I like the fact that this book covered many fundamental topics leading to further readings that may be of interest to viewers. However, I would not buy this book because it is very expensive, but I do believe it is an easy-to-follow reference book if you need to know some intro stat knowledge. BTW, I don't recommend the other Ott&Longnecker book. Just look at how many editions this book and that one have...

The book arrived very quickly and was in great shape (no bent pages and the binding was perfect). In terms of the product itself, who really gets excited about a stats textbook? There is a newer edition of the book, but my professor chose the older edition so we didn't have to pay as much. I guess the questions are different between the two editions, but the text and examples are basically identical.

Only Available for PC,

I would have loved to get the digital edition of this book, either rent or buy, but its only available on the PC which (I suspect intentionally) makes it effectively useless. I guess I'll have to stick with sharing the physical edition with my friends.

If you like to understand how things work then this book is horrible in its explanations. Just a little bit of mathematics and some pseudocode for the procedures would have made some sense out of this attempt. For each area, find a good paperback to supplement your graduate travels through this text and you will be fine.

GREAT book,

I am taking a 500 level statistic course and this book is requirement. It is easy to read, it has most of the data online for minitab so it does the job.
