About the Author

Douglas C. Montgomery is Regents’ Professor of Engineering and Statistics at Arizona State University. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, all in engineering. The author and coauthor of many technical papers and twelve other books. Dr. Montgomery is a Fellow of the American Society for Quality, the American Statistical Association, the Royal Statistical Society, the Institute of Industrial Engineers, an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute and an Academician of the International Academy for Quality.

If you want to take your knowledge of statistics and see how it is applied in the arena of Statistical Process Control (SPC) this book is a great place to start. A prior background in statistics will be very helpful in understanding the underlying concepts. A more basic introduction to some of the underlying distributions discussed may help the concepts make more sense. Overall, the text seems quite comprehensive in its coverage of SPC. It should give a newcomer to the field a firm foundation for further exploration.

The book, like the title says, gives just an introduction to statistical quality control. For example, if you are looking for advanced multivariate process control techniques, or if you are looking for all the statistical inference to formulate the confidence intervals for process capability indices, surely this book is not for you.

The book it is very illustrative and easy to read. I think this book is for undergraduate engineering students only. If you are a serious applied statistician this book will only give you the vocabulary you need to communicate with engineers that are working on quality control areas.

Also, the examples of the book only show how to apply the SQC methodology only in perfect and sometimes unrealistic scenarios that you definitely won't see if you are working as a consultant in a manufacturing company.

This is a different book from the hardcover version. We did a quick comparison with the regular textbook and some of the questions were different. This will make it very difficult to complete assignments. At the bottom of the cover it says this is the International Version. Also, it states in large print "this book is not to be sold in the US".
