Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This widely adopted introduction to theories of personality summarizes the major theories of personality and assumes that the best understanding of personality derives from a variety of viewpoints.

From the Back Cover

This introduction to the theories of personality introduces readers not only to the rich history of psychology but to practical information that helps them understand their own lives and their relationships with other people. Using a theorist-by-theorist approach, the book summarizes the major theories of personality and emphasizes that the best understanding of personality derives from a variety of viewpoints. Thus, theories representing the psychoanalytic, sociocultural, trait, learning, sociological, and existential-humanistic paradigms are offered as different—yet equally valid—ways of approaching the study of personality. Includes a series of experiential exercises. What Is Personality? Sigmund Freud. Carl Jung. Alfred Adler. Karen Horney. Erik H. Erikson. Gordon Allport. Raymond B. Cattell and Hans J. Eysenck. B. F. Skinner. John Dollard and Neal Miller. Albert Bandura and Walter Mischel. Edward O. Wilson. George Kelly. Carl Rogers. Abraham Maslow. Rollo Reese May. For anyone wanting a comprehensive understanding of personality and individual differences. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is a great reference book for the psychology student. Each chapter is a different theorist. My class actually called for the newer edition but I have been able to use this edition just fine. It is only off by a few pages.
This seller was also wonderful. I emailed her asking for a rush since I was behind in ordering the book and my class was due to start very soon. She got it right out to me and I had it in plenty of time to start class.

Please note that all the reviews for the different editions are commingled into one page! Depending on which link you click on you will be taken to a different page and you may wind up ordering an old edition by mistake. Currently, the purchase section for this page has two different links one which says "used from $0.22" and another which says "used from $8.60". If you click on the link to the first one it takes you not to the 2006 edition but to the 1994 edition!!! To order the 2006 edition you need to click on the link that specifically identifies it.

Having never used the book before I didn't notice the difference and much to my shock I got the 1994 edition even though I clicked on a link in the 2006 edition. What a scam. Yes, I should have played closer attention but Amazon should not be engaging in a bait and switch.

I graduated from Hamline Univ. with my Psychology degree (my second degree) in 1982. Prof. M. Olson and Prof. B.R. Hergenhahn were great teachers. I am sorry to hear Hergenhahn has passed. This was one of my favorite Text books and I still refer to it in our home library 32 years later! A great read and it really opened my young mind to what is going on in our personality development. Has been very useful in my long and varied Psychiatric career.

This book is well written and a great starting point for anyone beginning their study of psychology or for someone who would just like to learn a little background of some of the founding fathers (and mothers) of psychology.
