The Best Introductory Text on Vedic Astrology,
This review is from: An Introduction to Vedic Astrology...spiritual science of the Ancients (Paperback)
Howard Beckman has spent many years working in the Vedic Astrology field as both an active astrologer and as a gem therapist. This book is, quite simply, the easiest to understand Vedic Astrology text for someone new to the discipline. Howard lays out all the terminology in a format that is easy to understand and that dissects Jyotish in a simple way. Although other texts have moved in this direction, Howard's text takes all of the best parts of earlier texts and roles them into a smooth combination. His sections on the planets in houses and rulership rules are particularly good. I teach astrology, and do charts. I keep this book in my store at all times for folks interested in this discipline. Very highly recommended without reservation!Gary Gomes

The lack of depth in this book was extremely disappointing. Topics are covered very superficially, leaving the reader wanting more. The serious student of Vedic Astrology would be better served reading the books of K.S.Charak & Ernst Wilhelm. For a good introduction, try James Braha's introductory work.

My experience of the book is that it is well written and packed with a lot of information. The book does not provide lengthy descriptions for each placement so if you want a longer read, I would consider something different. This book is concisely written. I personally think that the author's observations are extremely good for the space allotted. The book claims to be an introduction and it delivers as titled. The amount of information in this book is more than adequate for someone who does not have a lot of knowledge about the vedic system. This wouldn't be an appropriate choice for an advanced student. An additional bonus here is that if you are used to the Western system and stubborn (us Taurus people die hard) you will not be put off by the information allotted. It is a really good book for beginners and it will help you consider the validity of other systems.

This was my favorite book on level 1 of Vedic Astrology. I found it an excellent reference book and easy to use quick cross reference to the planets and houses. It was very well written, and made Vedic Astrology more comprehensible. Also has larger print, which made it easy to read.
