Book Description

February 1998 0890067023 978-0890067024
A guide to the underlying technologies, key selection criteria, and design and deployment processes behind wireless local loop systems. This reference aims to help the reader develop a sound understanding of WLL system design procedures and provides practical guidance on choosing the best WLL and access technologies. It discusses the main areas of the telecommunications environment and the concepts of convergence and access technologies. The reader should learn why WLL is challenging the use of traditional copper cable, and the economic issues behind wired and wireless interconnection. Sections identify and describe key WLL parameters, including range and capacity; discusess critical customer service issues; examine the CDMA/TDMA debate and consider which represents a better access technique; evaluate various access technologies and guide the reader in the selection process; detail the network deployment process; show how to target effectively telecom service; and describe how to apply for a license, choose a service offering and develop the business case.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Wireless local loop - the use of radio to provide a communications link to homes and businesses - has been a topic of much interest in the wireless community since around 1995. However, much has changed over the last five years. In the first edition of this book, I looked in detail at the use of wireless local loop as a means to provide connections to homes at low and medium data rates. Since then the emphasis has changed towards higher bandwidth systems able to provide 1 - 10Mbits/s to homes and up to 1Gbits/s to businesses. In this second edition, I have taken the opportunity to look in detail at this new class of wireless system, with extended chapters covering broadband technology and operation. I have also looked back over the last five years to ask why the original vision for fixed wireless changed and what the implications are for the future.

The aim of this book is to be the single point of reference for engineers, managers, marketers, sales teams and others working in the area of fixed wireless, within manufacturers, operators, regulators, consultants and others involved in the industry.

I have been highly active in the fixed wireless arena since 1997, working as Motorola's head of strategy for fixed wireless and chairing and presenting at many industry conferences. This book is a synthesis of all I have heard and learnt and has become widely used within the industry. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complete and Up to Date reference book, November 7, 2000
A very detailed and complete book on Wireless Local Loop technologies currently available. Unlike other books, this one was written in a direct and easy language that fills the requirements even of manager or Engineering people. In my opnion it's also clear in the book the author's preference to CDMA technology, but the book also discuss others like TDMA, TDD etc..

In sumary: Not five Star, but the best reference currently available at this time.

pag. 73 6.1.3 Fast Fading Right Statement The phase difference is related to the difference in distance divided by the speed of light(giving the delay on the signal) multiplied by the frequency of transmission.

Mistook Statement The phase difference is related to the difference in distance multiplied by the speed.....

pag.74 On the text the correct is ns(nanoseconds) instead ps(picoseconds)
