If you want to get a grip on basic Catalan grammar and the literary language I highly recommend Gili's Grammar. It is a traditional approach but effective if one has the basic tools of traditional, Latin grammar. Phonology and morphology are covered in concise detail. There is a fine chrestomothy of literary texts illustrating the range of Catalan literature, poetic and prose from its medieval origins upto the time of the printing of the first edition (1952). The book also contains a fine lexicon which covers all the vocabulary in the texts. I hope this was helpful.
