About the Author

Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.  Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.

I am very glad that this book showed up on time as my teacher was going to stop feeding us pdfs.

This book is extremely well written and easy for students to read and understand. The illustrations are also excellent and help students link the microscopic to the macroscopic. The book also very clearly lays out methods for quantitative problem solving. Many well written sections and problems are related to real world applications (deep sea diving, airplane cabin pressurization, rust, soap micelles, skin cancer from sunlight calculations, cancer treatments.) If you are looking for a complicated, indecipherable, dry but comprehensive tome, then this is not the book for you. If you are interested in getting started in your study of chemistry with a book that is actually relevant and readable, then this is a great book! My students consistently give it rave reviews as well. I haven't met Prof. Tro, but if I ever do, then I will thank him for writing this book.

My junior year of High School just started several days ago, and anxious as I was, due to a rigorous schedule filled with AP & honors classes, my distress was alleviated when I started to read this book for my honors chemistry class. I am extremely happy to report that Professor Tro's book is filled only with the most coherent information I've ever read. Preceding textbooks deluded me into believing that textbooks could not be written eloquently; and boy am I happy to report that I was proven wrong by Professor Tro.

I had this book last semester while taking a general chemistry course. As a student with little background in chemistry, this book ACTUALLY helped me understand chemistry so much. It's easy to follow and very well-written. The examples have explanations for each step and the concepts are organized well. Tro is great at "dumbing it down" for introductory chem students.

If there's one thing I learned from this book, it's that I'll never be a chemist. Without outside instruction there's no way I could ever hope to follow in Walter White's most basic footsteps from this material alone. I've also yet to learn how to transform water into whine. All this being said, paying close attention to the concepts introduced here will likely allow you to pass the course it's intended for...if you're sure to memorize everything while staying up all night for 3 months straight chugging high octane coffee and smoking a few packs of Marlboro reds in between the resulting bathroom breaks.

Some of the answers to the practice problems are wrong. I don't know how good is the info it provides, there was no need for me to read it since my profesor went based on just class notes, I just tried the practice problems from each chapter. Maybe the latest edition has less errors.

I can't believe I am saying this about a chemistry book but it's truly the best science book I've used! The examples and explanations on how and way things are, are made very understandable. Hats off to the author!

Excessive graphics and illustrations make lessons hard to follow. Book seems to patronize a younger, inexperienced chemistry student. Provides a basic overview of the principles of chemistry.

Love this chem book. Used it for my intro to chem class. It was so good at explaining things that I just read the book and I never really needed to go to lectures except for attendance.
