Book Description

November 20, 1997 0387983074 978-0387983073 1
Providing an introduction to functional analysis, this text treats in detail its application to boundary-value problems and finite elements, and is distinguished by the fact that abstract concepts are motivated and illustrated wherever possible. It is intended for use by senior undergraduates and graduates in mathematics, the physical sciences and engineering, who may not have been exposed to the conventional prerequisites for a course in functional analysis, such as real analysis. Mature researchers wishing to learn the basic ideas of functional analysis will equally find this useful. Offers a good grounding in those aspects of functional analysis which are most relevant to a proper understanding and appreciation of the mathematical aspects of boundary-value problems and the finite element method.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb introduction to Functional analysis, August 9, 2000

Daya Reddy has produced a new edition of an older text which now has some extra material and has improved the explanations of the earlier edition as well as include many useful diagrams. This is an excellent introduction to Functional Analysis avoiding the often seen theorem/proof approach which overwhelms students who are not literate in the mathematics. All concepts are very well explained and demonstrated, the progression is slow and careful so as not to disallusion students who are not pure mathematicians. Even for mathematicians this is a good, gentle introduction. When I first saw the earlier edition in the library I was captivated by the style and ease of development so I emailed Professor Reddy and asked about a new edition, the preprint of which he sent me to peruse, I then later bought the new one as it came out. The beauty and power of functional analysis is also evident

Well worth buying so you don't get lost in the none too simple mathematics of functional analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most readable functional analysis book for engineers., May 13, 1999

This review is from: Introductory Functional Analysis : With Applications to Boundary Value Problems and Finite Elements (Texts in Applied Mathematics, Vol. 27) (Hardcover)
This book is essentially the second edition of his now out of print book titled "Functional Analysis and Boundary-Value Problems: An Introductory Treatment". I like this bood very much. It is not very demanding on mathematical procedures, but lays out the nessary concepts in a very logical progression for Engineers and none math majors, though some math people may not like it. The examples and graphs are very revealing; they illustrates mathematical concepts very well, makes them easier to understand.

I first noticed the power of Functional Analysis when the professor proved that you'll never get a converged finite element results around a point load, no matter how you refine the mesh. The odd things was that he didn't even mention shape functions and stuff; just used some properties of spaces and operators. Though not on the same scale, that reminded me the spirit of Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermat's last theorem. This book easy starters in to appreciate the power and beauty of mathematics.

I am a graduate student of electrical engineering and I found this book to be a superb introduction to functional analysis. I would imagine that for non-math majors this subject area is initially difficult, as it was for me. Dr. Reddy's book is a step-by-step and well laid out progression from basic functional analysis to the very practical application of finite-elements. The book contains many concrete illustrations that made the material very accessible to the mind of an engineer. Moreover, I found this book to be an excellent preparation to later study of distribution theory and other PDE-related mathematics. I highly recommend the book.
