Great Oil Painting Tools Information,
By
This review is from: An Introductory Guide to Oil Painting Tools and Supplies (DVD)
This DVD is a great overview of materials for the beginner oil painter as well as great nuggets of info for experienced painters. With so many art supplies available on the market, it's hard to know what supplies do what and why. The DVD helps clarify the variety of materials used during the painting process along with information about how different supplies work. As an experienced oil painter, I discovered information on things I didn't know about along with clarification of things that I only had a cursory knowledge of. Wish I had had this around when I first started oil painting! Would have saved me a lot of time, trouble, and confusion. I look forward to more videos and hope they come out soon.

For people wanting to get their feet wet in oil painting for the first time, whether you are a novice to art or experienced in some other medium, I highly recommend this recording to watch first before diving in and buying materials. Also, maybe experienced oil painters might learn something new! This will help you make smart decisions, because knowing what to buy up front will both save you money and also put you on a more direct path to making a successful painting.
Doug does a terrific job of carefully explaining all material choices. He covers brushes that work best with oils, the various choices in paints and what to look for, solvents, mediums, canvas, etc. Its essential to understand your materials first before you begin oil painting because they are a major investment. And, a total novice would have no clue what to buy as the choices can be overwhelming and confusing. Also, very importantly, Doug covers safety issues you need to know before you oil paint. Its amazing how many oil painting references leave this information out! So, this contains essential information for understanding oil painting materials and how to handle them. Thanks Doug for doing this!! More videos please!!

As of today I have not even purchased 1 oil painting brush but now I feel like I can go into an art store and stock up on everything I need to start oil painting. Doug Farrick offers up-to-date information on oil paints, solvents, supports, brushes, etc. He demonstrates oil painting tools and materials and how they are used in the studio. This DVD is an excellent resource for the beginning oil painter. That would be me!

I've been oil painting for over ten years so I wasn't sure if I truly needed this DVD. However I was pleasantly surprised by all of the great information packed into Doug Farrick's DVD.
I found the section on the different grounds very informative and some of the studio tips were completely new to me as well. This DVD has something in it for everyone. Regardless if you're a beginner or a seasoned painter like myself. It's just a great resource that you can dive into whenever you have questions regarding Oil Painting Tools and Supplies. I highly recommend this DVD and I know I'll be using it in my studio, as a great reference tool, in the future.

Become a Better Painter, Understand Your Tools!,

Doug Farrick has created the definitive visual guide to Oil Painting Tools in this comprehensive video. His knowledge of the subject is of the highest level and he truly gives a perfect overview of the materials available to today's artist.
As artists, we sometimes become limited by our habitual use of mediums and brushes and this video was a flash of enlightenment for me. Having always put off the use of painting knives to a "future time" and you know what that means, I now have the incentive to move ahead to a new phase of my painting journey. Showing the variety of knives and new painting knife designs set my creative juices to full flow. My brushes will get a break as the knives move me onward. Having never paid much attention to solvents with the exception of my decades long standby, I appreciate Doug's in-depth appraisal of several different types and will follow his recommendations immediately. I would not have known about the dangers and benefits without viewing this video. All in all, I have taken away a new knowledge of what is possible and what will provide the longest life of my paintings from watching this video. I do suggest this for anyone who wants to get to know his or her painting tools. Tools without understanding them will never allow for achieving what is possible. This video will change the way you look at how you paint by making you more comfortable with your paints, brushes and knives, solvents, and supports. And that is a good thing, no doubt there! I may finally become that "Master" I always thought I could be.:) I look forward to future videos from Doug as I truly enjoy his presentation skills and the quality production in this dvd. I'll be keeping a look out for the next installments!

An Excellent Overview of What You "Need to Know",
By
This review is from: An Introductory Guide to Oil Painting Tools and Supplies (DVD)
This is an overview of what you need to do to get a start in oil painting. Obviously, if you've gone through an art program in higher education, you should know this, but don't bet the store on it. Some programs teach the craft of painting along with the poetry of it, but if you were a victim of education free-for-all, this DVD will give you a solid idea of the basic equipment you need to dive into the medium.
The section on paint is pretty important. The introduction of water-mixable oil paint is a major breakthrough in painting, especially if you are worried about your health. Then the difference between professional and student-grade oil paint (there is generally less pigment and less expensive varieties of pigment in student-grade). The DVD does a good job of making distinctions between oil, water-mixable, and alkyd, which is one of my old favorites. Alkyd paint is something to look into, and Farrick underlines the primary use painters turn to it for. The subject of painting knives might seem pretty pedestrian, but I was surprised at the new developments in painting knives! Utrecht has done some innovations that are worth looking at and this DVD has them all. One of the things I noticed about Farrick's presentation is going from fairly simple principles to more complex ones. When he gets to painting grounds, he starts talking about the structure of oil painting. I'm not going to tell you the whole story, but what he says is basic oil painting chemistry, and every beginner needs to hear it. It will save you lots of problems in the future. The new development in grounds and sizing are covered, and some old standbys, like applying rabbitskin glue to canvas in preparation for accepting an oil ground, are challenged. There are new ways to do that. I might have to take him up on that, as rabbitskin glue really stinks. I find really useful information on this DVD about something every user of oil paint has to deal with: toxic materials. When you're young, you have this illusion that nothing can harm you. What is really happening with art materials is you are building up dangerous levels of toxins in your body that reach crisis points as you age. Farrick alerts the viewer to some of the pitfalls of the green revolution, like pesticides sold as paint thinners. If you love your body, get this DVD. It will be a good reminder as you make art on what to avoid, even if the packaging misleads you. He also shows you what to use if you decide to go the solvent route (you don't have to use solvents to paint with oil, but if you choose very traditional methods, they are unavoidable). This DVD informs you on the choices that give the least chance of harm. Good show. The Other Materials section features at least one thing that is indispensable for safety reasons. Find out what I mean. I recommend this DVD for anyone wanting to investigate the basics of painting and likes to see what they are not only supposed to get, but get an expert's explanation of what they do.

This is by far one of my best purchases from amazon yet! Doug covers an excellent array of information from start to finish. I have been on the hunt for a DVD that gives me the courage I need to pickup a brush and learn to paint and I truely believe I have found the one. I have shared the title with some friends of mine that also agree this is a great buy! Great content, I learned a lot! I look forward to additional volumes in the series. A+!!

I have always found painting in all forms very interesting, but also very intimidating. I have many friends who are extremely talented artists, one of whom directed me to this DVD. The info in the DVD was excellent, easy to understand and follow, well organized and increased my understanding of the craft of oil painting. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone looking to either get started or even refresh their basic knowledge of the subject. Looking forward to the next release! A+++!!!
