About the Author

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob’s love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Bob has written textbooks covering introductory algebra, college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, precalculus, and liberal arts mathematics, all published by Prentice Hall. When not secluded in his Northern California writer’s cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.

I am very grateful and thankful for this great buy!

Not only is the material in the book great, but I especially love how Blitzer easily breaks down each concept and presents it in a straightforward way.

Having taken the compass test years ago, scoring low, and not using anything but basic math in the interim, I needed a low level math course.

I haven't studied Algebra since High School (30yrs ago). This book instructs at a pace that allows the student to adsorb the material quickly and fully. The only criticism I can think of is that not all the answers to the practice questions are available at the back of the book. Only the odd numbered ones. Otherwise, I recommend this to anyone who needs to re-introduce themselves to the world of Algebra.

This is a really good book, explaining in detail and with a lot of care, how factorisation works, how to solve linear functions, how to solve quadratic functions with factorisation, graphing methods etc. Everything is done in color and with lots of pictures, tons of examples and tons of exercises (900+ page book).

I must warn people that this is high school Algebra though, not college Algebra, but I won't knock any stars for it since I found it a very pleasant book to read regardless.

After three years in college I returned to the subject of math. Having taken the compass test years ago, scoring low, and not using anything but basic math in the interim, I needed a low level math course. The course required "Introductory & Intermediate Algebra for College Students". This book uses a logical incremental, progressive approach that can be followed quite easily. Also, very helpful is the partner website pearsonmylabandmastering.com. If your teacher wants to use the website you may have to pay for access, but it is well worth the money.

Not only is the material in the book great, but I especially love how Blitzer easily breaks down each concept and presents it in a straightforward way. My favorite thing is the chapter summaries which I wish I could purchase as charts separately (the list all the formulas/proofs in one column, and an example in another). Was easy/cheap to get the solutions manual for this, so I highly recommend it. If you'd like to see the chapters at least, look up the book on CourseSmart. I'm loving this book, and next I'm grabbing Blitzer's Alg/Trig book! Just wish he made a comprehensive Calculus book(s) =)

I have read many algebra books but this is the best one I read so far. I am not saying this because I was forced to buy this particular book for my college algebra course lol. Every chapter had numerous examples and diverse ways to solve questions. After not being in a math class for so many years this book was a big help. With that said I have to also add at times a lot of the stuff was presented too technical and it made it hard to keep up at some points. I give this book 4 star.

I taught middle school math years ago and wanted to review before taking some more advanced math courses. Blitzer's text was an excellent choice. Math to me was like a tractor pull - the further I got, the more lost I became because I had to rely on memorizing processes without fully understanding the underlying reasons. Blitzer provides clear explanations of the reasons for the processes. Also, I was never able to give my students reasons when they asked, "When will I ever need this?" but Blitzer gives real world examples in every section of how the particular process is used in real life. I plan to teach college level math in the future and I plan to seek out Blitzer's textbooks for use in my classes!
