I love Quicken, and have been using it for about 3 years. I've tried MS Money, and find Quicken a lot easier to use. That said, I'd call Quicken 2001 a minor release that doesn't really add much over Quicken 2000.

I've used Quicken for over 5 years. Until this version I've been a big fan. This version has many unacceptable bugs. It's added up the wrong total on my credit card accounts. I've used Quicken for over 5 years. Until this version I've been a big fan. This version has many unacceptable bugs. It's added up the wrong total on my credit card accounts. It leaks system resources until it crashes. It fails to update the status on several of the windows until you restart it. The bill minder sometimes doesn't flag an uncoming bill. Sometimes it will stop updating the screen and will not minimize. I seem to spend almost as much time handling techinal problems as I do my finances. This version seems to be thrown together so Intuit could make a quick buck.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Support, November 2, 2000

This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
I have recently upgraded to this newest version of Quicken- only because I thought it was time to "modernize." I am an experienced Quicken user and have always enjoyed the program.

But, upon upgrading I found a problem whithin one of the investment options. When this occurs, you call for help. Not with Quicken, however. Check out Intuits web page. They list FAQ's and have no provision for specific Q&A's. Call their phone number (not toll free) and you are put into a labrynth which get's you no where.

They do have a bug feed back system, but no promises of fixes and they state that their policy is not to respond to you.

You are putting your financial accounting in their hands, but they lack the most important ingredient to customer satisfaction- simple service. ( I did see a 900 number- but no thanks.)

At this writing, I am consdiering reloading my old version.

Help Intuit get the message. Don't buy or upgrade.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quicken on-line bill payment doesn't work, December 25, 2000

I agree with most everyone else reviewing this product. We have used it for years to manage our budget, expenses and pay bills electronically. Over the years as they add feature upon feature, the program has become less intuitive, more quirky, and less stable. When I installed this new version, elctronic bill payment through CheckFree stopped working. When trying to pay bills the following message appears "Quicken was not able to complete your request. The next time you go online for this financial institution, Quicken will attempt to resend your original request. Please try again later. If the problem continues call Quicken Bill Pay @ 800-463-6765 (OL-293-A)." When I caled that number they told me to call 520-618-7155 or 630-692-3000 (at my expense for their problem! How rude!) After about 4 tries with various technicians I finally reached one poor soul who said "We have no known solution for an OL-293A error" and then passed me to a very nice guy who said "they have no solution at this time, but are working on it." He took my telephone number and said they would call me when it was fixed, but could give me no time frame. His only solution for me was to go back to my previous version of quicken 2000 using the old Qdata file formats which are now out of date. I'm waiting for their phone call and manually writing checks. This sucks! don't buy this piece of buggy software, especially if you want to pay bills on=line. This is how companies go out of business by sticking it to their customers!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dedicated Quicken User, November 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
I've used quicken for nearly 7 years now and have gone through many different versions. For the last several years, Quicken has become buggier and buggier. In this latest release, I've noticed many different, unacceptable bugs (at least 15 I've counted so far), have written Quicken support several times, and never received a callback or update. I'm very disappointed with this product, and after being a loyal Intuit customer, I may be going with the next version of Money when it is released. It seems to me, Intuit just released an extremely faulty product to make a quick buck. And, by the way, their customer service is horrible. The only way to talk to a customer service rep is to either call a 900 number or call a number and bill the time to your credit card. I definately do not recommend using this product!!

Some of the bugs I've noticed are:

When you click on Planning, you always get GPF faults (at least with my data file). When you reconcile, it will point you to items which have already been roconciled. It will calculate incorrect balances for your accounts and then bug you indicating your balance is low when in reality it isn't. When you pay something from the calendar view, it doesn't remove the old schedule entry. .....and many, many more folks.

Simply put, don't waste your money or your time!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quicken 2001 Deluxe, September 24, 2000

I love Quicken, and have been using it for about 3 years. I've tried MS Money, and find Quicken a lot easier to use. That said, I'd call Quicken 2001 a minor release that doesn't really add much over Quicken 2000.

The user interface, especially for the "My Finances" home page, looks quite a bit different. I'm not sure its better, just different. It more closely resembles the quicken.com website. For people who use both, this could be a plus. I've also found a few minor bugs that will hopefully be fixed in future updates.

I was hoping Quicken 2001 would automatically download stock quotes every 10-15 minutes; it doesn't. One would think this would be an obvious fallout of merging Quicken 2001 with quicken.com. Heck, many brokerages offer free real time quotes over the Internet these days. The PIN vault still asks for a password every time you download, even if you've already typed it in earlier.

Quicken still lacks a comprehensive ability to track insurance policies (life, auto, health, home) or provide estate planning advice. I would like to see something similar to the retirement planner for estate and insurance planning.

Overall, I'm still very happy with the product. I'm hoping that Intuit is focusing their creative ideas on Quicken 2002, and that we'll see some great new features next year.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this version., September 19, 2000
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
As a long time and very heavy user of this product, I disappointed with the latest 2001 release. The product no longer allows you to separate your view of a particular stock 'overview' (with gains and losses) by account, it forces all account holdings into one window per security (lumping all holdings (whether in IRA accounts or taxable accounts) together) which is a big minus from prior releases. I have also found three bugs in this early release which have been reported to the company and are related to downloading quotes from the Quicken.com site. I would give them a little while to work the kinks out before buying. I also think that the feel and flexibility of the new version is more cumbersome and clunky to move around in than prior versions. A bit too much 'change for change sake' rather than simplification where needed and additional number crunching where needed in the investment section. Basically, however, I would say that the product (if fuctioning properly) is an invaluable organizational tool for those with reasonably complex financial data needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quicken 2001 has advertisements that cannot be turned off., December 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
Quicken 2001 Deluxe's on-line help states: "You can turn off advertisements that appear in the Online Financial Services Center. Advertisements in other areas of Quicken cannot be turned off." Hmmm... Let me get this straight - Intuit thinks I'll use their financial services after learning that they won't let me control whether of not advertisements appear on my desktop using their software for which I paid a fair price.

Linux users might find GnuCash a functional alternative.

They'll remain in control. GnuCash is literally free and is also free of advertising.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, November 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
I'm another disappointed user of the new 2001 Deluxe. There were initial problems when I installed the program with my data from 99. The latest update from 11/00 totally screwed up my stock pricing history for the last 10 years. Technical support SUCKS!

I'm switching to Microsoft Money & suggest that anyone looking at Quicken, look at Money as an alternative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wait for Quicken 2002, February 26, 2001
By
Norm De Plume (Lake Forest, Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
I've been using Quicken since the 2nd DOS vesrion and this is the first time I've returned a release. There's virtually nothing new in it, it's buggy and now it's slow (Security Detail windows used to display instantly now take 3-7 seconds to write -essentially disabling the ability to scroll through securitys). Features that disappeared three releases ago still haven't returned (e.g. The Price & Value History graph that used to be the defalut graph in the Security Detail Window is still supremely inconveniently buried ten levels deep in the Investment Performance Graph section.)

I track over 200 stocks in six brokerage accounts. My data files (even after validation and year end copy) are 15MB. I account for every penny coming in and going out. In short I'm a power user of Quicken and should be one of their strongest advocates. In the last few years however, Intuit's self serving business practices and blatant disregard for customers have me looking for alternatives. Unfortunately, I've tried mirating to Money and not found the grass any greener in Bill Gates' yard. (See the reviews for Microsoft Money)

If you're already on Quicken 2000. Don't waste your money on Quicken 2001. If you're a potential new comer to Quicken, consider this: There is NO TECHICAL SUPPORT - unless you consider paying $2/minute "support". I call it something else and it's illegal in every state but Nevada.

If all you need is an automated check book, either Quicken Basic or Money Basic will suffice.

My advice to those needing to track investments, wait for the next one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stick with Quicken 2000, January 8, 2001
This review is from: Quicken 2001 Deluxe (CD-ROM)
Recently "upgraded" from Q2000 to Q2001 (R2). Big mistake. Much slower and loaded with bugs and shortcomings. I'll probably go back to Q2000, even with all the pain of re-entering data.

Stick with Q2000 until Intuit fixes Q2001.
