Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Most self-employed and small-business people see accounting and bookkeeping as a necessary evil, and this is where QuickBooks software comes in, now with around 3 million users worldwide and in its umpteenth version. Crucially, it won't simply provide ready-made information for the year-end figures. Instead, it will give you a continuous picture of how well your business is doing, and take care of those boring but essential hard-to-get-right and expensive-to-get-wrong tasks. That's why most businesses hand their books over to professional accountants to do the work for them.

But accountants aren't cheap, and if you can employ the office PC to do the job accurately and quickly yourself, why not take the plunge? It's reliable, and better still it isn't complicated--because the person entrusted with the company accounts is almost certainly not going to be an accountant. The EasyStep Interview pumps you for information about your enterprise, using the data to swiftly set up your business on QuickBooks. And the Navigator makes it simple to find your way around the program. You can create invoices, enter sales, track customer contacts, cost time spent on jobs, manage stock, handle payroll, track VAT, and prepare your year-end figures.

This new version is an attempt to make the program easier to use and more flexible. You can now customize reports, dragging and dropping columns to highlight the information you need; you can batch print reports; and the new Time & Basis Stamps avoid confusion by showing you how and when each report was created. Among other refinements and additions, Intuit has increased the ways of navigating the program, bringing back the old icon bar. And you can now e-mail and fax invoices and estimates direct from QuickBooks. Better still, Online Billing means your customers can now pay you online, via BACS or credit card. --John Rennie

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Terrible Support, December 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: QuickBooks 2001 (CD-ROM)
Great product when it works, but if you have a problem with their downloads, or tax upgrades, even with a new version, don't expect any help unless you buy their...Premium Support Service. In fact no one at QBooks will want to talk to you unless you give them a credit card number if you don't have Premium Support. Their warranty is -0- at day one, but you don't find out till you open the box. They admit to be willing to help with a new product, but YOU HAVE TO PAY by the minute via credit card, or sign up for their premium Support, which they highly recommend.

If the Qbooks has no gliches, then it a 5 star product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mostly as good as the old Quickbooks, but..., April 17, 2001

This review is from: QuickBooks 2001 (CD-ROM)
The good news is that all the functionality of the old QuickBooks I had learned to use several years ago is still there. It is a bit askew from what a traditional green-eyeshade-wearing accountant would expect to see, but still recognizable as a full-featured accounting package sufficient for any small and many medium sized businesses.

The bad news is that the new QuickBooks attempts to dumb down the accounting process with a web-style interface that uses Internet Explorer as the front end. There are some good features to this, but it just can't substitute for actually learning bookkeeping, and it mightily obscures the process, making it more, not less, difficult. Sure enough, I can't get payroll to work without subscribing to the monthly tax update. Forget it, Intuit, I'm not biting. One last thing: I would respectfully suggest to Intuit and similar vendors that I do not appreciate having relentless, merciless marketers shoving stuff in my face via software for which I have laid out hard-earned cash.

So: It's still a pretty good accounting package, a bit overpriced, with too much front end razzle-dazzle, and too much input from marketing. I would have given the old version 3.0 four stars. This one gets two.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good accounting package -big time system resource hog, February 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: QuickBooks 2001 (CD-ROM)
I updated to Quickbooks 2001 approximately 3 weeks ago. I used to be able to have other applications open and go to Quickbooks and do an Invoice. I no longer can do that. I have to have all other applications closed for Quickbooks 2001 to work without freezing up my computer or giving me a warning of low system resources.

I have a current computer also Dell 8100 Dimension 256meg ram/40gig HD/1.3ghz processor. So it isn't my computer that is at fault.

So users that want to upgrade beware of the fact: not being able to do multiple applications if you are in Quickbooks 2001.
