Having used Turbo Tax for the past few years, I can't see why anyone would want to fill out forms manually. Granted my tax situation is not that involved, I can usually have the software complete my entire Federal 1040 form in about an hour. For repeat users, a lot of information is retrieved from last year's returns (assuming you're on the same computer) which saves a considerable amount of typing. And the forms are sent directly to your printer when done. Just fold them and send them to the IRS.
This year (tax year 2001), electronic filing is made even easier with the option built into the software. There's even a rebate that Quicken offers for those who wish to pay to e-file which offsets the cost entirely.
If you decide to purchase this software then be prepared for Quicken to attempt to sell/push other products on you. There will even be a few desktop icons that appear after you install the software. And an additional folder will be added to your "Favorites".
Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will save you money, January 7, 2002
This review is from: TurboTax 2001 for Windows (CD-ROM)
I must say that I was sceptical, when I bought TurboTax. I thought I will never have enough time and patience to deal with software to fill in tax forms.
But, I must say, it was very easy! The interface is very intuitive, it very quickly figured out my situation and asked me all the relevent questions.

I have a fairly complex tax return, with stocks, 2 jobs, AMT etc. It used to cost me (a lot) to do it with an accountant. But it was a breeze with TurboTax. I was done in 30 minutes, and was ready to file.

I also imported all my data from Microsoft Money, which worked fine, and downloaded my W-2 from the processing site (through TurboTax) which also went smoothly.

Bootom line: it will save you some money.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Way to Do Your Taxes, November 5, 2001
By
This review is from: TurboTax 2001 for Windows (CD-ROM)
This is my fourth year using Quicken TurboTax and it will be my second year using the state tax version. I'm sold on it. I can't imagine going back to pen and paper to do taxes. The program takes you step-by-step through the tax process by asking you questions about the various sections of the forms. It also prompts you to make you remember about things that may have slipped you mind, like other deductions. And, it makes suggestions for deductions that you may not have thought about. At the end of the process you can print out the forms for mailing in the traditional format or in a format that's easy for the IRS computers to read. In addition, you can opt to file electronicly. The help section IS very helpful. It actually makes sense of the rules and instructions for filing your taxes and explains the relevant sections of the tax code in easy to understand language. My one suggestion is that you have all your papers with you before you start the process. You can, of course, save your work and come back to finish or edit it, but it is a pain to be half way through and remember that your mortgage statement is two floors away.

My advice: Don't do your taxes without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars TurboTax - more is less, April 6, 2002
By

For the third consecutive year, I purchased TurboTax for my family tax software. As it brings forward much of the data from the previous year, it makes data entry quicker, certainly a good move towards guaranteeing repeat business, and th single reason I purchased TurboTax rather than a competitive product.

That said, my beef with the latest, Year 2001 version, has to do with its inclusion of many screens of video files discussing the latest tax laws and implications for all. Two points here - from the data taken from my income status, it is clear that parts of the tax laws do not apply to me. Does TurboTax then skip these sections? Not on your life; I should just be impressed that software created to bring organization from chaos can do so, and click through all the excess.

Oh by the way, save your file often. My computer locked up twice on me (PIII 550 machine operating on Win98) attributed by microsoft explorer as due to the video, though none were being asked to run at the time.

I buy tax software to simplify a distasteful process. Lately, TurboTax is bringing unneeded complexity back to the process.

I usually have done my taxes myself using the EZ form from the IRS because I do not itemize. A few years ago I received Turbo Tax as a gift (my birthday is in Jan). I had already filled out my 1040EZ, but thought I would use the Turbo Tax and compare the results. If I had mailed in my 1040EZ I would have gotten a $263 refund, with Turbo Tax I ended up with $1480 and I still did not have to itemize. I have used it every year since with similar results. Also, if you ever applied for a loan and had to find old tax returns - now they are on you PC ready to print.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rats!, July 11, 2002

This review is from: TurboTax 2001 for Windows (CD-ROM)
I've used Turbo Tax for 7 years, but 2001 was probably the last.
I'd carefully kept Internet Explorer off my computer - no easy feat! Then, I install TurboTax 2001 and it installs IE! No asking if I wanted it, no "cancel" button, just a program I didn't want. (Which incidentally [fouled] up my internet connection.)
But that's not all. While running, Turbo Tax splashes advertisements for all kinds of garbage on the screen. I don't know about you, but I find doing taxes unpleasant enough without having to plow through supurflous adverts.
Maybe they should charge a little more up front and quit the bogus hucksterism.

This review is from: TurboTax 2001 for Windows (CD-ROM)
I have used Turbo Tax for my tax returns for the past 3 years and I will never go back to an accountant or a paper return. What I love most about Turbo Tax is that they process your return in about a day and have your money direct deposited in your account in about 10 days. It is great!
