Installation of TurboTax is just as easy as it's always been. The activation procedure requires an Internet connection, but overall the brief procedure is transparent and painless. Quicken users can swiftly import their financial data, as can those who've used previous versions of TurboTax. Each copy offers free (after rebate) electronic filing and TurboTax State, which can be ordered from within the program. The preparation itself is almost as simple and reliable as going to an accountant; each step and each piece of information required is fully explained. If some financial data is temporarily unavailable, it's a snap to skip ahead and complete the rest while waiting on that information. Once the numbers are all in, TurboTax does the math and instantly releases the news, good or bad. Printing is simple, as is e-filing, and all data can be saved for future reference.
The Tax Library feature is comprehensive and well worth exploring, as it contains all the information users need to save countless dollars and hassles. From IRS documents to professionally produced videos explaining key concepts, the materials are sharply focused and helpful to the broadest range of taxpayers.
For 2002, Intuit has instituted a licensing system that, while mostly harmless, has caused enough problems to become controversial. Each package requires an activation that links the full product irrevocably to one machine and installs background software to monitor licensing compliance. People who want to use more than one computer may do so, but they will have to settle for one fully functional product and one in trial version mode (only printing and e-filing are disabled in trial version). To enable trial version users just need Internet access. This functionality makes it easy to prepare in multiple locations-for example on a laptop and a home PC. When users are ready to file they just need to return their data file to the computer with printing and e-filing capability. This multiple-PC issue shouldn't affect most buyers, and should not alter the opinion that TurboTax is still the best tax preparation package available. --Rob Lightner
The updated Tax Law Advisor shows how new tax provisions will impact your taxes in tax year 2002 and future years. From the Alternative Minimum Tax and Child Tax Credit to major new education and retirement provisions, this feature helps you take advantage of all the tax-saving opportunities going into effect now. Also updated is the complete tax library. It includes official IRS publications, more than 1,000 pages of easy-to-find onscreen references, the complete Money Magazine's Income Tax Handbook, plus video tax advice from top financial experts.
TurboTax Deluxe also allows you to retrieve and input your wage, mortgage interest, and investment data with instant data entry by automatically retrieving W-2 wage data, 1098 mortgage interest, and 1099 investment data from participating employers and financial institutions. It then enters the data into the right forms, reducing manual data entry and simplifying tax preparation.
All federal versions of TurboTax desktop products for Windows include product activation to better ensure customers use the product in accordance with the License Agreement. An independent test of product activation technology in Intuit Inc.'s TurboTax desktop software products confirms the technology does not negatively impact computer performance or compromise customer privacy. The findings of the tests, performed by PCTest Corporation, an independent software-testing lab can be found at http://www.pctest.com/intuit/index.htm. You can still prepare multiple returns from one computer, and install and prepare your return on multiple computers. To fully uninstall the the SafeCast/C-Dilla element of TurboTax, you must download the free uninstall application at the TurboTax Support website. For additional information about product activation, go to http://www.turbotaxsupport.com and refer to TurboTax Product Activation in the News and Tips section.
Note: Free download of TurboTax State is good for one return only. Additional copies are needed for additional states. One free 1040 e-filing is also included after rebate.

Buy TaxCut,
By Business Windows User "cliffu" (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe 2002 (CD-ROM)
As a loyal TurboTax user since at least '94, I was shocked to find that this year's licensing restricts the software for printing to a single computer. I have contacted Intuit support and I was told that if I (1) buy a new computer (2) want to print from work (3) my computer crashes (4) any other reason I can't get my pc to print, I will have to buy a new license from Intuit. It sounds like they've decided to license personal finance software like an Operating System from Microsoft. I really don't understand that mentality. I don't believe that computers use personal finance software, I think people do. Buy TaxCut, I know I will next year (or if my PC crashes, etc.) and send Intuit a strong message!

I've used this program for many years, and it is an excellent tax program, but the new activation scheme makes it a poor choice now for me. Here's why: I can no longer work on my taxes on the computer in my study (that has no attached printer), and then copy the tax file and print out the results on another computer in my same house that IS attached to a printer, without buying another "license"--that is, another turbotax program at the list price! The program can only be installed on one PC. Tough luck if it the one you work on but is not attached to a printer. You can't copy the tax file and print it out elsewhere because you can't install the program you bought "elsewhere"--even in the same household-you have to buy another program! In my house, the computer with the printer is not where I can find the peace and quiet to work on my taxes. That one is in my study, but does not have a printer. I copy all other files--word documents etc and transfer them to the 'family room' computer for printing. Can't do that with turbotax without buying 2 programs. I use to put turbotax on both computers, and use one in my study for working on the taxes and the other for printing out the final result. Can't do that anymore unless I buy another program. I know they want to prevent unlawful copies, but they could have crippled only the print or email function, so you couldn't unlawlfully give the program to someone else (it wouldn't be useful without the ability to print the return)--instead they disallow installation totally on more than one computer. If this isn't an issue with you--and it won't be for many users, it's a great tax program, but in my situation (and for others like me)you'll have to buy another program to print the tax return.

TaxCut Next Year,
By Bob L (San Rafael, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TurboTax Deluxe 2002 (CD-ROM)
I've used TurboTax since 1986 and this is the last year. I would rate this product a 5 except for Intuit's activation scheme so I'll rate it a 1. While I had no problem activating TT using the internet, I now find that I'm going to have to reformat my hard drive in the immediate future. This will require that I reactivate the product to continue to use it. The same will be true if I change out the HD or buy a new computer. Also, each time I use the program, my registry is modified on the next boot which is a direct result of Intuit's activation scheme. I haven't let others use my copy of TT but I feel like I'm being punished anyway.
