A Brilliant and Soulful CD, February 3, 2004
This review is from: Intuition (Audio CD)
I bought Sheldon Sands' DEAD SEA STROLLS CD on a bit on a whim, as the thought of an American composer collaborating with Palestinian and Israeli musicians seemed both interesting and noble; the idea of music traversing boundaries and helping in some way to bring peace closer to the people in the Middle East (well, the politicians don't seem to be getting anywhere!) is brilliant.
What I did not expect was such outragiously gorgious, evocative, hypnotic and soul stirring music. This album ROCKS! Not only is this CD packed with wonderful melodies, arrangements and unique oriental-meets- western instrumentation, but these cats who played with Sheldon on Dead Sea Strolls really cook! There are burning improvisations, especially by Israeli Eyal Sela on Turkish Clarinet and Indian Flute that just dazzle and sizle and leave my insides feeling all warm and invigorated.
I would recommend Dead Sea Strolls highy, even to folks who ordinarily don't listen to "world" or 'ethnic" music. This one is superb!
