Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this sequel to Transcendence (2012), Cole Ryan continues to learn more about her true identity. As memories of her past lives (and past lovers) come flooding back, they start to affect her relationship with her savior and current boyfriend, Griffon. Will Cole be able to break free from the hold of her visions and create a new future with Griffon? More important, does she want to? Fans of the first book will enjoy this sequel, which features just as much supernatural action, as well as a surprisingly enjoyable love triangle. Grades 9-12. --Candice Mack

Review

Praise for Transcendence : Omololu moves the action along... reincarnation theme stands out as a nice break from the usual paranormal subject matter... nicely done. Kirkus Reviews I raced through this suspenseful story, loving the mystery, romance, and past lives that make it come alive. Cate Tiernan, author of the Sweep and Immortal Beloved series With a fascinating premise, a spunky heroine, and a sweet romance, Transcendence was a page-turner from beginning to end. Malinda Lo, author of Ash and Huntress

More About the Author

Every journal I've ever had ends on or around January 21st, because I find it really boring writing about my own life. I have found, however, that I really like writing about the lives of imaginary people and that the voices in my head often have interesting things to say.

My picture book WHEN IT'S SIX O'CLOCK IN SAN FRANCISCO came out in July, 2009, and my young adult novel DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS (under C.J. Omololu) released in February 2010. TRANSCENDENCE, a YA novel about reincarnation and the meaning of life came out in June of 2012, followed by the sequel INTUITION in June of 2013. The YA thriller THE THIRD TWIN will be out in February of 2015 followed by another standalone thriller RECOVERY in early 2016. You can catch up with me on my website at www.cjomololu.com.

The love triangle with Cole between Griffon and Drew is also done in a very believable way.

Cole has to choose between her past and her present while at the same time finding a way to use her new abilities to save her best friend from evil Akhet.

I really enjoyed the first book, but the blurb above made the book seem like it focused solely on a love triangle.

The first book, Transcendence, and this sequel, Intuition are based on a very interesting premise of certain characters being able to remember their past lives, and as such they are basically immortal. I love this concept and it brings about many interesting possibilities.

The character development of Cole is done in a smooth and believable way as she evolves both from her experiences in her current lifetime and through memories from her past lives. The love triangle with Cole between Griffon and Drew is also done in a very believable way. The story has good tension, and it kept me drawn in as I wanted to know more about what was going to happen next.

While it is fun to read, I like that it also poses a philosophical question about wealth, ability, and responsibility, all done without being heavy handed. This is an excellent sequel and I highly recommend reading both Transcendence and Intuition as they are unique and compelling.

After TRANSCENDENCE introduced Cole (who's such a believable, relatable teen) who suddenly starts remembering her past lives, I wondered where this series would go next. Cole has a delicious crush (Griffon), with whom she shares some, shall we say "difficult" moments from a shared past, and she's learning more about what it means to be Akhet. INTUITION takes Cole's situation to a new level, ramping up the suspense, creating real jeopardy for characters I care about, and causing Cole to face difficult choices. Honestly, I didn't think anyone could rival Griffon, but Drew really brings it--the guy has a lot to offer, and it's great how he illuminates a different side of the Akhet. I love the way Cole's world expands and we learn more about the secret organizations within the reincarnated. Add to that some wonderful scenes of San Francisco, and INTUITION is pretty much the perfect sequel in an inventive, fun, and thought-provoking series.

Liked the characters and world. Good plot. Little thin on supporting background information but will read the next one. Like girls who take care of themselves.

Best Bits: I was a little nervous when I read the synopsis of this one. I really enjoyed the first book, but the blurb above made the book seem like it focused solely on a love triangle. It seemed that way for the first portion of the book, but the story was about more than Griffon, Cole, and Drew. It was a great look into the way that love changes and grows. Of course, it's up to you to decide if you believe in past lives, but the book brings up an interesting question. If you could remember past lives, would you spend time hoping to reconnect with previous romantic partners, or would you try to experience new people and things?
There's also a pretty amazing twist thrown in, just in case you were wondering whether this one was as suspenseful as the first book. It was completely unexpected, and I really can't explain it because it would give everything away. I will say, that it has really opened up the possibilities for the future of the series, and it makes Cole and Griffon's roles that much more important in the grand scheme of things.
When I interviewed Omololu during the release of the first book, Transcendence, she said that she considering this series to be contemporary fiction (whereas I had labelled it fantasy/supernatural). I have to say, that she has the ability to weave together various genres that makes it hard to really put a stamp on it. I'll have to investigate where my local bookstore has it placed.

Nit Picks: I do think that the love triangle wasn't completely necessary to the story. It was done well, but I feel like we get love triangles in most (99.9%) of YA novels these days. I understand the role that it played in the book, and the development of Griffon and Cole as a couple, but it just felt like the other plot developments could have kept my attention without that added relationship drama.

I liked the storyline for this one better than the first in the series, and there was a peak of activity in the book that I enjoyed. It still fell short of totally wowing me though. I didn't like how these two people are so in love, but still completely fail at communication...it just made it (the relationship) feel fake and shallow.

So I liked the story alright, didn't really enjoy/feel the relationship.

Short and Sweet:

*sigh* Intuition was insane.... in a good way. There was so much going on in this book. SO many twists and turns. It was non-stop! I liked Transcendence a LOT, but I adored Intuition. :)

To Elaborate....

Intuition jumped off running from where Transcendence left off. In fact one of the major plot points is something I can't talk about without spoiling Transcendence! SO, SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ TRANSCENDENCE. Okay, still with me? Drew. This guy made me feel so confused. It was crazy making. One minute I liked him, the next I didn't. I think in this respect C.J. Omololu is a complete freaking genius. Well done, madam. I felt ALL the feels.

However, I was also super annoyed at Griffon who is being stupidly 'heroic' in the most obnoxiously misguided way. BUT, this makes sense later in the story. Cole herself is just having a bad couple of weeks here. It's kind of an everything that can go wrong does period of time for her. But I loved where she arrived emotionally in the end. I respect when a girl comes out of a love triangle with her priorities straight and Cole definitely does.

Lastly, what a creeptastic ending! As I was reading this 'thing that I cannot speak of' I realized my whole body hurt from being tense. I was freaked.

What an agonizingly interesting jumping off point for the next book!!!!! Can't wait! :)
