Book Description

For Starters August 1, 2002
Every day we are confronted with difficult problems and thorny situations for which we eitherdont have enough information to make clear-cut decisions or for which there is no easy intellectualanswer. At these moments, we all wish that there was another way to know how to makethe right choice. Fortunately, there is another way through using our intuition. More than justa feeling or a guess, true intuition is one of the most importantyet often least developedof our human faculties. Often thought of as something vague and undefinable, many peoplemistakenly assume that intuition cannot be understood and developed. Intuition for Startersexplains what true intuition is, where it comes from, the practices and attitudes necessary fordeveloping it, and how to tap into intuitive guidance at will.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Initially, these titles seem dissimilar, but they actually bear a striking resemblance to each other in tone and approach, at times seeming interchangeable. Intuition's subtitle is telling: the book concerns unlocking one's inner guidance via yoga. Notes Walters (The Promise of Immortality: The True Teaching of the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita), "Intuition is the innate ability in everyone to perceive truth directly not by reason, logic or analysis, but by simply knowing from within." One taps intuition, which according to the author is deeper and purer than mere logic, by exploring the ill-defined "superconscious" mental state, which resembles a state between sleep and wakefulness. Purposeful writing encourages patience, persistence, and consistency; initiates should seek "calmness, clarity, and joy. Intuition is always based in a deep sense of calmness and detachment." As a biochemist (Univ. of Toronto), Lawford makes a strange proponent for mysticism, yet here he claims that we seek what he calls "authentic" power, a state in which each person is "in harmony with the deepest values of his or her soul." This liberates us from the conventional power of others. Despite Lawford's very personal, workmanlike approach, it feels as if he were rehashing how to redefine one's environment. Neither Lawford's nor Walters's book has broad appeal, and only very large libraries or those with specialized self-help collections should consider. Instead, try Pema Chodron's When Things Fall Apart, which advocates inner peace via meditation, or Douglas Bloch's helpful and more mainstream Listening to Your Inner Voice, which combines meditation and exercise.

More About the Author

Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters) , a direct disciple of the great master, Paramhansa Yogananda, is an internationally known author, lecturer, and composer. Widely recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on meditation and yoga, he has taught these principles and techniques to hundreds of thousands of students around the world.

In 1968, Kriyananda founded Ananda Village in Nevada City, California, dedicated to spreading the spirit of friendship, service, and community throughout the world. Ananda is recognized as one of the most successful intentional communities in the world; over 1,000 people reside in Ananda communities in the US, India, and Italy. The European retreat and community located in Assisi, Italy, also serves Ananda meditation groups in Europe, Croatia, and Russia.

Ananda Village is also home to The Expanding Light, a world-renowned guest retreat facilities where thousands of visitors annually visit for renewal or instruction in many aspects of meditation, yoga, and the spiritual life. The nearby Ananda Meditation Retreat, located on Ananda's first property, function both as a retreat and as the site for Ananda's Institute of Alternative Living.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Guidance on Inner Guidance, February 18, 2003
This review is from: Intuition for Starters (Paperback)
"Intuition for Starters" is a small book on the basics of intuition and following your intuition. While there are several books on the subject available and many more that have a chapter on intuition, this book is unique in one very important aspect. It is the only book I have seen on intuition that effectively explains how to know when something is intuition and when it is not. People often learn to distrust their intuition because it has proven wrong when in reality it was not intuition at all. Learning to discern when something is truly your intuition speaking to you and when it is not is critically important if you are to learning to trust your intuition. This is a recommended read because the discussion of discerning intuition is so well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Intuition, December 5, 2006
This review is from: Intuition for Starters (Paperback)
For most people who use reason to guide their behavior and disregard intuition as unscientific, this book is a god-send. The author explains clearly the reasons why intuition do not work for most people and gives the readers some powerful techniques on developing intuition. It also shows to the reader how to know that something is from your intuition and when it is not.

In conclusion, this book is a recommended read for all those who are scientific and rational in their nature. If they were to read this book and apply these techniques in their every-day life, it would complement (and not devalue) their rational way of behavior. This book shows that intuition does exist and it is fool-proof.
