5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
I've been an astrologer since the mid-60's so I've read about a billion astrology books. There are a only handful that I would heartily recommend and this one is at the top of the list. Fabulous for beginners yet still providing plenty of really compelling material for experienced astrologers as well. How'd she do that?!

IMHO, this book would be useful for practitioners who aren't astrologers per se but would like to use astrology to gain insight on themselves or their friends. If you are a beginner and you want to learn the general language of western astrology, I'd consult other books (i.e., Woolfolk, the Marion and March series, Sakoian (sic), Hickey, or for a more comprehensive grounding, Burk or the Parkers).

In this book, Ms. Campbell approaches astrology intuitively, producing results that are by turns revelationary good and exasperingly cryptic. Instead of using a cookbook style (using accepted astrology language), she adopts the socratic method in giving her descriptions of the planets, signs and houses (ex: Sun in the 1st house: How do I...?)

Midway through the book, she showcases twelve biographies of powerfully successful people in which she gives little verbal interpretation, expecting the reader to "intuit" the chart while reading their testimonies. (Not being able to do so, I felt I wasted my time.)

I finished reading the book "feeling" both mystified and awed. When she shares her insights, I gain a fresh approach to the planets, signs and houses, but I can't grasp her intuitive socratic style. (I managed, however, to glean useful information from the questions asked regarding the north and south nodes, strangely enough.)

Again, this book should not be recommended to beginners trying to master the nuts and bolts of western astrology and interpretation.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Astrology Was Meant to Be, February 26, 2004
This review is from: Intuitive Astrology: Follow Your Best Instincts to Become Who You Always Intended to Be (Paperback)
I am a skeptic who admits that while there may be value to ancient forms of divining, they are in this day and age often distorted to the point of confusion, or even worthlessness. This book completely satisfied my desire for instruction from an authentic point of view. The author sees astrology as a tool for self-exploration, offering intuitive questions, rather than definitions, based on one's chart.

The tone of the book is nurturing and extremely positive. Every combination of planets and signs is viewed as potential for spiritual growth.

The book is laid out in sections, introducing the reader first to the planets, then to the signs, then the houses. You learn to read your chart (and resources for acquiring a free chart are included) by asking yourself specific questions based on planetary placement, and also by studying the charts and descriptions of people the author has worked with extensively. The examples and questions integrate the reader's knowledge very effectively, so one's resulting understanding of the chart goes very deep.

She also explains very clearly how to view the relationships among the planets (conjunctions, squares, trines, etc.), and offers guidance in interpreting each of these in one's own chart.

While providing clear explanations of all aspects of astrology, the author shows obvious respect for the reader's ability to look inside and find the answers that apply to his or her own specific situation. She achieves a beautiful balance between providing solid guidance and encouraging the necessary independent thinking. I am grateful for the time and care the author put into creating a work that has proven so valuable in my process!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intuitive Astrology, July 28, 2003

I am not an astrologer, but I have had my natal chart done by a few different people, and have also had a couple of synastries done as well as transits and progressions. I think of myself as somewhat conversant in the language of astrology, but definitely a beginner--I still don't have all the houses memorized for instance. I thought the structure of the book was fabulous. The workbook format was incredibly helpful--asking questions for you to really think about and get a handle on where and how a house or sign or planet fits in your life. The tone of the book was like having a conversation with your own personal astrologer--weaving in stories from her own background as well as illustrating points via the twelve people she profiled was excellent. It helped me visualize and understand the complexities of different planet/sign/house etc. interactions. I also liked the easy to understand explanations of squares, trines, oppositions. And probably the most important thing I loved about the book and about Elizabeth Campbell's take on astrology is her non-judgemental stance and focus on the positive. She might explain how different things could derail you, or challenge you, but it is always with a healthy dose of how to spin the dice in a positive fashion. It is my favorite book on astrology that I have ever read!

I've been a believer in the efficacy of astrology to help you understand why you or people you know are feeling and/or acting in certain ways.(Helps me be more understanding). The trouble was I just didn't get how it worked until Elizabeth brought the houses, signs, etc., with their different personalities,to life. Now I can play the game too and work on "Being the person I always intended to be." Good well written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Water Signs especially, August 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was led by the Universe to this book -- and it refreshed me and affirmed that I must continue to follow my own path and vision. This is not for someone who has a very practical and rigid approach to astrology. This is for intuitive types (people with significant water) who practice astrology as an intuitive art...where the chart speaks to them and yields to them revelations.

The intent of this book is to help practitioners develop an integrated view of their chart energies. So often, people understand aspects of their chart in a very disjointed way. However, charts and people are perfectly designed and have life themes. This book helps you open your subsconscious to understand your life themes in a very fulfilling and encouraging way.

If you are relying on others to interpret your chart, this is not the book for you. If you want to learn to rely on your own intuition and instincts to receive messages from your chart then read on. This book will help you develop your antennae.

I already practice astrology in this way -- with visualization, meditation, openness, asking the chart questions, etc. However, I was still very moved by this book because the reality is you can never exhaust the revelation in your chart. As long as you live you can wake up and find a new way of interpreting or glimpsing new insight. Reading this author is one way to do that -- this author has such a nuanced way of perceiving chart energies that you will enjoy adding her wisdom to your practices.

She won't give you all the answers -- because the book is after all about relying on your instinct. She will simply give you a compass and give you questions to ask yourself. (Earth signs might be exasperated by this.) It will be up to you to tap into a higher universal consciousness.... don't be afraid. The greatest conversation is always between you and your chart; you and the Universe.

Not for beginners. This is for those who already have studied houses, signs, planets, and aspects and understand what they mean separately. This is for those who now wish to go the next level -- going to the level of synthesis, of integration...where you use your own vision and muse to glean how to interpret your chart in a very cohesive fashion.

This is a holistic approach to the art of self-interpretation via astrology. You will be inspired.

I do wish the book were longer. Perhaps there should be a sequel.

I like this book mainly because Campbell writes beautifully. The descriptions of the planets, signs, and houses are a little different from other astrology books. Otherwise, this is another cookbook.
