5.0 out of 5 stars I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET BACK TO MY TIME, July 13, 2005
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
In 1997, Kagome is a normal everyday Japanese high school student who has to constantly listen to her grandpa going on about old legends and folklore. She basically lives in a shrine with her grandpa, mother and little brother, next to a sacred tree and a mysterious well. When she is dragged into that well by a humongous centipede demon, she finds herself back in the time of the warring states. The demon wants the "Shikon Jewel" from Kagome. There's no way she will be able to stand alone against this demon so she will have to free an even more powerful half demon to fight it. That half-demon's name is Inuyasha!

Rumiko Takahashi has a certain magic in her manga. To me she is like the Steven Spielberg of Japanese comics. She has a lot of popular appeal but in the end it's not because she caters to her fans, but because there is just something unique about her character designs, or maybe it's the warmth and passion she brings to her work. I just love her stuff. Inuyasha is by no means targeted at small children. There's nudity, blood, and genuine frights in this volume. It seems Inuyasha and every other demon that comes along wants the Shikon Jewel because it amplifies their power considerably. Actually, that's why Inuyasha was ensorcelled, because Kikyo, who everybody seems to think has been reincarnated as Kagome, had to stop him from abusing his power. It will be interesting to see how this relationship will play out between the two main characters. While I have been aware of Inuyasha, this is the first time I have ever read one of the manga. It looks like it will be good, and there are many many volumes to follow.

I would also recommend the manga Mermaid Saga by the same author and also the anime version of Inuyasha. Two other anime that have the same theme are The Twelve Kingdoms and Escaflowne.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inuyasha love??? Way past that., November 24, 2005
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
The first thing you should know about me is that I am bery picky about my graphic novels. If the art isn't detailed enough, the storyline is lacking, or the novel is not translated well, I do not buy it. I recommend being the same way about every japanese comic book, because oftentimes they are over celebrated, and in my opinion, not worked on hard enough to be considered art.

The second thing I would like to say is GOD BLESS RUMIKO TAKAHASI! She is one of the most talented manga artists ever. Her style is a little leaning towards the Anime side, but she obviously cares enough about her art to make sure everything is perfect. Her full color prints, (like the covers) are beautiful, and envyed by me and all of my anime cronies. :P Anime is fairly simple enough to draw if you are good with preportions, but is very hard to make look GOOD, so this artist is a rare find!

Her storyline is definately not lacking. Kagome Higurashi is a hirhg-school girl who falls down a well and lands in feudel japan. She meets a half dog demon pinned to a tree (By the woman who he loved, Kikyo, who betrayed him), in a twist of fate, frees him. She later learns of the demon's love for the JEWEL OF THE FOUR SOULS, a jewel that can give the users near limitless powers. Inuyasha wants that jewel, so he trys to steal it. The priestess Keade binds him to Kagome with a single word, "Sit, boy!". In an act of heroics, she decides that she is going to shatter the jewel into a thousand little tiny peices. (It's a longer story than that, but, hey, I've got a lot to write and not much space) Thus making Inuyasha, (who still wants the jewel and to kill kagome) and Kagome, (who's like WTH? I'm stuck in a weird world AND i have to work!) forced to collect the jewel shards.

The books go as follows, until they meet the horrible demon Naraku. Naraku wants the jewel to become full demon as well, (another long story) thus he also is trying to kill Inuyasha and find the jewel. Along the story, they meet a few friends, and the story becomes romantic as well as funny.

If you want to get the full story of Inu-yasha without spending a whole lot of money, I would buy the manga which is beautifully layed out, and wonderfully drawn. If you really don't care, and like watching the show more, I would buy the DVD's in the PERFECT COLLECTION or the SEASON BOXED SET. It is cheaper that way, and you also get a bigger hunk of DVDS.
If you are just experimenting, I would recommend reading up on the story line from a fan site where they can be more elaborite, first. For some reason, a few people don't like it.

Otherwise, have fun watching an excellent Anime/ reading the manga! It's really worth it!

You will get hooked on this series like I did. You will not believe how beautiful the art is and how you could read it again and again and not get tired of it. It's a MUST. It is something like the show, but somehow not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great. Love it! ^^, July 5, 2005
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I first saw like the third episode of the anime show Inuyasha on Adult Swim, and became hooked. After watching another few episodes and looking it up on the internet, I decided I'd like the whole first season. Yeah, and then I found out it was like $80.
Instead, I decided to look up the manga for it. I bought the first three ones and read them in a day. No, actually I was done with them before sunset, and I got them at four (of course, that gives me about five hours, since I live in Texas).
I love these books! I think that it has an interesting plot line, and I think Inu-Yasha is just about the cutest half dog demon I've ever seen ;)
About parents' concerns, yeah it has murder, and some nudity, and a little cussing, but come on. I'm like 13, and I'm fine with it. As long as your kids are mature (though they should probably be 12+) it shouldn't be a problem, unless you're one of those possessive people, or really religious. 'Course, we hear the cuss words at school and see murder on the news.
Anyways, yeah, I love Inu-Yasha. Woo! ^^

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, August 2, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I first started getting interested in "Inuyasha" when I saw the anime series on Cartoon Networks "Adult Swim". I liked the show, so I looked it up online and found out that the show was based on the manga. I decided to buy the first book in the manga series last week. I recieved the book today, and I liked it so much that I read it straight through in less than two hours. It's a great manga, I love it. I'm defiantely hooked, and I plan on getting more Inuyasha manga. If your into action and fantasy, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Start of a Wonderful Story, April 17, 2007
By
Dylan (Pennsylvania, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Inuyasha is a terrific story from Rumiko Takahashi about many interesting characters. Before I go into what this book is about, I will say that Inuyasha is both a Manga and Anime. A manga is like a japanese comic book, although that isn't a fair description because most manga are for adults and Inuyasha is no exception. An anime is a japanese cartoon and Inuyasha the anime was created to be based off of the original manga story with some differences. If you are reading this review though, you probably knew all that.

Specifically Inuyasha is about a 15 year old girl in modern day Japan named Kagome. Kagome lives with her mother, brother and grandfather. One day she falls down an ancient well and travels back in time. She meets a strange boy named Inuyasha as well as other peculiar characters. Unknown to Kagome, she is the reincarnation of a priestess named Kikyo who died many years ago. Kikyo and Inuyasha were in love, but tragedy kept them apart(though I won't ruin how this happened). Kikyo was given a powerful item known as the Jewel of Four Souls but had it burned with her when she died. The jewel has the power to give demons and evil humans terrifying powers. It is reborn inside of Kagome and accidentally broken into many pieces. Now Kagome must team up with Inuyasha to get back all of the pieces before evil beings create chaos. How can Kagome survive in a world of demons and ancient technology? Did I mention Inuyasha was a half demon with a human mother and demon father? That's kinda important! As this volume ends, the two prepare to face a demon named Yura to get back their first piece of the jewel. Yura controls hair and can be deadly, will our heros succeed?

If your new to Inuyasha, this might all sound confusing, so I recommend watching the anime as it explains things much better. If not, this manga has beautiful artwork and a very compelling story with interesting characters. Unlike most manga, Inuyasha reads left to right like a normal book. In Japan books read right to left and Inuyasha is no exception, but the english version reads left to right. This is an important note as most manga even in english read right to left. Some criticize this change, but I like it, I feel it is appropriate given where this version is released. That being said, I understand why this will frustrate some fans of manga.

Inuyasha is a LONG manga and contains images not suitable to children. It is even recommended for 13 and up. The story is wonderful and only gets better! Once you start reading it, you probably won't want to stop. Each volume of the manga is aroung 200 pages. Having watched the anime before reading the manga I must admit the changes in artwork are very interesting, but the story is still terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Anime!, November 22, 2005
By
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I have read most of the Inuyasha books but the 1st one is probably my favorite! I always watch inuyasha and have seen almost every episode but the first few episodes and books seem to be the best. In this book Kagome a 15 year old girl in Tokyo gets pulled into a well by a demon. She finds out that the well takes her to Feudal Japan and she meets a half dog demon, Inuyasha. I cant really tell you much from there. If you've heard of Inuyasha but not sure to get the manga, you should its well worth the money! I would reccomend this book to somone age 13 and up! There is violence, blood and nudity. NOT FOR PEOPLE UNDER 13!

5.0 out of 5 stars Anime does not equal G rated, July 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
To respond to the "beware of this book for kids" review, I must confess that there must have been a lack of research on her part because it is clearly stated just below the book on this site that it's young adult which is not fit for 7 year olds to begin with. Anime is known for it's nudity and violence and should not be confused with American cartoons. If one is looking for anime for kids of that age range then one needs to look no further then dragon ball z or pokemon. Inuyasha is a very well constructed anime series with a lot of plot depth and charactor development. It's not the author's fault that this woman purchased these books on the assumption that they'd be appropriate and please do not use her review as a prime example. It is certainly worth the effort to purchase this series. Perhaps her returning her books will only leave more for the 7 year olds to purchase. Let's hope they find Inuyasha as good as we do. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inu Yasha is Awesome!!!!!!!!!, September 11, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: InuYasha, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This book rules!!!!!!!! It is one of the best books in the world!!!!!!! It is the first book in the manga series Inu Yasha.

Anyway It's all about a high school girl namd Kagome who falls in a well and goes to ancient Japan. She meets a doglike halfdemon named Inu Yasha. Inu Yasha is a real bad dude at first, but he gets nicer. They are going around to find all of the shards of the Shikon Jewel.

Rumiko Takahashi the author of this book is a great author. She also created another really good manga called Ranma 1/2, but Inu Yasha is better!! I encourage you to buy lots of Inu Yasha books (there are lots out) and also check out the seies Ranma 1/2!!!!!!!!! This book is worth all the money!!! From one Amazon.com customer to another, YOU SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!
