INVASION of the FIlm Scoe buffs,
By
This review is from: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Audio CD)
I felt like I had been wishing for a CD release of this film score ever since I had first seen this film for the first time ever on DVD. The score is very 1970's cool. This may sound as if I find it "tacky" this is not the case. It is a chilling film score that gives this film a real heartbeat. Any film score buff should run to buy this cd not only for the score but the interviews also. They are very informative and entertaining. Denny Zeitlin's one and so far only film score is a triumph for films of this genre. This CD does not contain the Jerry Garcia banjo cues - Film buffs of this film know that the late Mr Garcia laid down a few cues that were used for the in film as a favor to the director. These are dubbed for the homeless banjo player within the film. This is a rare jewel in my film score CD collection. I highly recommend this CD. JackDVD@aol.com

"IT'S JUST A POD WITH A FLOWER!" (???????????),

How timely... here I am at 4:50 in the morning engaged in my Saturday ritual of listening to a soundtrack to begin the musical day (this morning it's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD... "They're coming to get you Barbara") and I'm asked to write a review for this stellar soundtrack. Again, the time and place are most vivid in my visual and musical memory: June of 1980... we had gone to see the unique, intriguing and atypical horror film PHANTASM (which has a compelling soundtrack, as well penned by the same guy who gave us SOYLENT GREEN... Malcolm Seagrave [Fred Myrow worked with Seagrave on PHANTASM]). It was our lucky night... PHANTASM was paired with the '78 version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. The film pulled me right in, and being the musician I am, Denny Zeitlin's score stood out from the first frame of the film. What a musical dynamic! As the pods are leaving their dying world for Earth Zeitlin's orchestral magic conjures a cosmic/magnetic hailstorm of meteorites as we ride the solar waves for Terra Firma. It never lets up... tension and release, as well as light, shade, and shock abound throughout the score... nice relief with the bagpipe rendition of AMAZING GRACE deceptively placed as a glimmer of hope for our protagonists. Without giving too much away the score delivers an unprecedented, albeit explosive crescendo as the film winds to its surprising conclusion (for those of you who bore witness, can you honestly tell me you saw that coming?). Now then, the visual portion (funny, although I am not synaesthetic, the soundtracks of various films I hear bring those visuals right up... perhaps my memory is more photographic): beautifully photographed in sacred San Francisco (my home for three years while attending college) coupled with another near flawless cast including Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum (is it my imagination or is he stellar in everything he does? I've seen films he has starred in that were awful, but HE was brilliant in the film), Veronica Cartwright ("Penny Robinson's" sister in real life!!!!!!!!), and... are you ready? What film can go awry with LEONARD NIMOY? SPOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! (I believe Shatner and Kelley must have yelled this several times throughout STAR TREK's run)... anyway, Nimoy stood out as the psychiatrist, Kibner who we think we can trust (the musical sting when he got locked in the freezer is unforgettable!!!!!)... just an aside, the soundtrack music I'm listening to now has moved into DAWN OF THE DEAD (Romero's original film... music by The Goblins... another must!!!!... I forgot to mention that W. Faulkner was a big influence on my "stream of consciousness" style of writing... boy this coffee is sure good... did I park in a loading zone last night... is it my turn to take the wombat for a walk... did Bacon write for Shakespeare?... was Glenn Miller really abducted??)... OK, enough of that... time to wrap this up... any SCI-FI soundtrack connoisseur will want to possess this recording... enjoy! Be well... behave... be nice... bee hive... LET IT BE... TO BE OR NOT TO BE... Bea Arthur (RIP)... Aunt Bea... be alert (the world needs more "lerts")... be yourself... "Thank you for lettin' me be mice elf, again"
Musically yours, BALTHAZAR "AIR COOL" PLATINI, III (of the "Chicago" Platinis)... OH MY... just one more thing... my soundtrack listening has now moved into THE EXCORCIST... buckle up... that review will be forthcoming...
