Book Description

Watch out for the road weenies!
A town is overrun by road weenies--a.k.a. joggers--who never smile. A girl thinks she's too old for Halloween...until she finds a special pair of gloves. A boy takes a shortcut to an unexpected place. A mummy takes his revenge, one little piece at a time.... Welcome to the weird and wacky world of award-winning storyteller and master of the macabre, David Lubar. These thirty-five tales ranging from the silly and offbeat to flat-out horrifying are just right for reading alone or for telling aloud in the dark. As an added bonus at the end of the book, David answers the question most frequently asked of writers with a behind-the-scenes look at the various ways he got the ideas for the stories in this collection. Don't be a weenie. Read these stories. If you dare!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–In this companion to In the Land of the Lawn Weenies (Tom Doherty, 2003), Lubar takes kids' wishes and fantasies and shows how they might go horribly–even fatally–wrong. Most of the protagonists in these 35 short-short tales think that they cannot be surprised, which makes their shock when they meet the unexplainable more fun, and creepier. Many of the selections are told with a sly, satirical humor. Although a few pieces fall flat, the chilling ones far outweigh them. What if you discovered, for example, that when you recorded over your dad's boring videotapes of a family vacation or a school play, those events suddenly had never occurred? And what if you accidentally erased the videotape of your mother giving birth to you? Oh oh. Not for the sensitive or easily frightened, this book is perfect to hand to youngsters who want something to read after they've finished all of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark titles (HarperCollins).–Walter Minkel, New York Public Library

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. Lubar strikes again. As in his previous collection, In the Land of the Lawn Weenies and Other Warped and Creepy Tales (2003), he delivers a series of funny, often surreal short stories. In one of the selections, a boy's trip with his dad and younger brother to Take Your Child to Work Day ends disastrously when some copy-machine pranks erase a face as well as another popular anatomical copy-machine subject. In the title story, a boy finds the chilling truth about the joggers who pass unsmilingly by his school bus every day. All of the stories are fun, bite-size reads that deliver plenty of punch in just a few pages. At the end of the book, Lubar tells how he came up with the idea for each of his tales. Another winning roundup, of particular interest to reluctant readers. Todd Morning

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow ,you have to read this book by HB from North Boulavard, December 19, 2006
A Kid's Review
If you want to read a book but you don't know what you want to read, you should read INVASION OF THE ROAD WEENIES written by David Lubar. Invasion of the Road Weenies are all little stories you can laugh so hard you'll almost cry of laughter. You might think it is dumb at first but it
will get really funny. I think this book should be 4 stars. I like one called COPIES. Copies is about a little boy and his brother that go to their dad's work for bring your child to work day. The two boys see a copy machine and decide to use it. The older brother puts his younger brother's face on the copy machine and accidentally presses 1,000 copies. Then the older brother sits down on another to copy his behind. Then finally when the copies were over they see that their face and behind was gone! If you like the beginning you'll really like it in the end. I hope read this book and I hope you have a good time reading this!!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Invasion of the Road Weenies: and Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
David Lubar strikes again with Invasion Of The Road Weenies, a book with a lot of funny stories. Two of my favorite stories were "The Dead Won't Hurt You" and "A Little Night Fishing." They are all good stories. They are not that long, but they are exciting.
David Lubar is a good writer. He had a lot of good books like Wizard Of The Game and Road Weenies 2#. They are really funny too. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1954. He likes computer magazines. He lives in Oakwood PA. He got 2 awards for his books I give this book a ***** rating!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great book!, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Invasion of the Road Weenies: and Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
This book is the sequel to David Lubar's Land of the Lawn Weenies. Lubar does not focus on one story, but rather many short stories. Each story is meant to be scary to some degree, however I enjoyed Invasion of the Road Weenies more for it's creative and interesting stories. It's a nice light read and is great for any age that can read!

There are only a couple downs to this book, which is why it's four stars. First, the book is much shorter than Land of the Lawn Weenies. This book may not grab the attention of the reader because each story is not relevant to eachother, making no suspense after one story. Don't get me wrong though, it's still a great book!

Though the title seems a little odd, it's a great book to read anytime. I'm sure you will enjoy these short stories, and therefor, Lubar has just earned himself a four star review.

P.S. David's next title might be about bike weenies :P
