What a Great Album!,
By
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
I highly recommend this Dove Award winning collection of tunes from three of Christian music's best musicians and songwriters. The instrumental pieces are wonderful statements of both virtuosity and lyricism. Each has its own flavor from the Eastern European "Budapest Control" to the Celtic "Isle of Skye" and each show cases each artist's unique gifts and abilities. For those who are familiar with Keaggy's acoustic instrumental work, this album has a much heavier sound to it, though it never weighs on you. If you are a fan of any of these three men or just great guitar playing, this album is a must for your collection. One comment is in order here: not all of the songs are instrumental but you won't be disappointed with the vocal contributions.

Guitarfest,
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
This album is a guitarfest. If I recall correctly from the liner notes, it is only guitar and percussion. This may be the best mixed album I have ever heard, Christian or secular. It sounds like three or four guitars are always being played simultaneously, yet you can always hear each of them distinctly. This album also has some of my most favorite work by Keaggy ever. I just wish he would let loose in his solos more like I have heard him in concert, and do so for more extended periods of time.

All around great album, another notch for Scott Dente,
By A Customer
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
Unlike others, I came to the this album because Scott Dente, the guitar playing side of the awesome "Out Of The Grey." I had heard of Phil Keaggy quite a bit, but never listened before this. I have become a Keaggy fan, now. These guys are all great together and separately. Dente is definately one of the most under-rated, yet great guitar players out there. Anywhere! Try this album, you won't be sorry. Check out Out Of the Grey to hear great guitar AND the just amazing voice of Scott's wife Christine.

Each track, alone, is worth the cost of the album!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
This is a must have, not only for those who enjoy contemporary Christian music, but for anyone who loves good rock & roll. I was recently introduced to the music of Phil Keaggy and was impressed, but not overwhelmed. I have never heard of King or Dente. I heard "Something, Somewhere" in a music store and knew that I had to have this album. It's one of the best I've bought in a long time. The combination of these three talents is awesome. The album is mostly instrumental, with four singing tracks. Each track, by itself, is worth the cost of this album. Although there are some songs I prefer over others, I don't think the day will ever come when I press "skip" for any of these on my CD player. If you are on this page, you are most likely a fan of at least one of these guys, or you have some other reason to be curious. Just buy the album. You'll be glad you did.

It's Decent Enough,

Let me say first, although this may upset some, that I am really very impartial with respect to Phil Keaggy. He's a skilled guitarist, to be sure, but I just don't care for his songwriting and musical stylings. He's a bit bland, and a bit out of touch, always seemingly about a decade, or so, behind musically. His music is just, kind of, "grating" to me. As much as I respect his abilities, I don't think that there is one Phil Keaggy song that I actually like. I, really, think that his solo music is mostly, if not all, terrible.
I can take or leave Wes King. I feel that he is a competent guitarist, and a decent songwriter. He has this good melodic sensibility, and he's got a few really good songs. The real reason that I picked this album up was to listen to Scott Dente's playing. Scott Dente is a true musical innovator, and an absolutely superb guitarist. He's got a very original percussive, syncopated, and melodic style of playing, and is light years ahead of many of the popular guitarists out there. He was definately one of my biggest influences on guitar. I have always admired his musicianship and ability, and always felt like he had to hold back a little bit in Out of the Grey to cater to his wife's vocals. He never, really, got to cut loose. Their music was always quite good, though. This album is OK, and I gave it three stars based mainly in Scott Dente's contribution. His guitar playing easily stands out well above and beyond the other players. The vocal tracks felt a bit bland, and the album would have been just fine, if not better without them. It is a clean sounding album, it is definitely mixed well, and is respectable enough. Although I don't see it as a "must own" for guitarists out there, I do see Scott Dente as someone who is a "must hear" for guitarists out there. He could probably put out an outstanding instrumental album, and probably should.

A guitarist's guitar cd,
By
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
I had the fortune of seeing these profoundly talented gentlemen live in Jacksonville, FL. Aside from being perhaps the nicest people on the planet (they took plenty of time to take pictures and sign autographs with my kids), this is a delightfully ingenious work that highlights the skills of all three. As a guitar player, I would consider this a "must have CD".

Three Guitarists Share Common Ground,
By A Customer
This review is from: Invention (Audio CD)
I've listened to all three musicians on their own projects hearing those subtle chops and licks that declare their shared love for versatility on guitar. These guys reveal a true love for the guitar that won't allow them to be locked in one set style. The other common ground I hear is that Dente and King have been long time fans of Keaggy. Keaggy along with his band Glass Harp, recorded in Jimi Hendrix's studio back in late '69 and early 1970 on the Decca label. Keaggy has a history and gift that got hidden in the subculture of Christian music. Any "Christian guitarist" worth being the salt of the earth has learned and grown from Phil. If you dig into reviews of many major guitarists like Eric Johnson and Steve Morse, they also mention Phil Keaggy as an inspiration and wonder. My only frustration is that not one of these gifted players gets to reveal the fullness of their passion. Good songs, great playing, but there's that restraint of the studio I hear too often. The album is worth every penny, but I pray for the day these guys will give us their great stage performance on CD.

A must for all Keaggy fans!,

These three guys have masterfully woven their talents together to produce an awe inspiring collection of licks on several instrumental pieces as well as some very well done lyrical additions. Although I hadn't heard any of King or Dente's work before, I was not disappointed.

I recently bought 2 KEAGGY's. INSEPERABLE ( UNLISTENABLE ) and this one. After INSEPERABLE I almost regretted having ordered this. Fear not. No 2 KEAGGY CD's are alike and where INSEPERABLE was pretentious, horrible musik with exclusively religious content and some of the lamest songs, this is again the complete opposite. Great songs, great musicianship by all concerned and no obvious religious messages. Great guitar playing, great songs, good lyrics, great vocals. If you like POP / ROCK with content and the guitar, you will not be dissapointed.P.S I gave INSEPERABLE to a christian friend of mine and he hates it as much as I do. |
