Where are the rest?,

Ho-Hum. Yes, it has some standout tracks. However, I know I'm not the only one waiting for a CD with ALL of Mike Post's theme songs - the ORIGINAL versions too - from Rockford Files to Magnum PI to NYPD Blue and Law & Order with all of the other great themes from the 70s and 80s in between. Is this ever going to happen, I wonder! And, doesn't anyone remember his 45 from 1975 titled "Manhatten Spiritual"? What a great song that you can't find anywhere.

A Soundtrack for NYC,
By nedkelly05 "Ned" (Australia) - See all my reviews

Being a fan of the show, I was pleased that this disk was released. Post says he was trying to capture the rythym of the City of New York and I believe he has done just that. Originally from Australia, I took this disk with me to New York on a recent trip and listened to it as I walked through the streets, taking in the scenery to Post's rythmic beats and distinctive melodies, just like a long play of the show's opening sequence. From the early seasons of the show, the tracks remind us of John Kelly and Andy Sipowicz showing us their NYC, their world glimpsed through a moving camera-eye, and the good and evil souls that frequented the interview room, where interogation, grace, justice, and the odd ear-clipping were handed out. A top effort by Mike Post, whose talent in making music synonomous with a TV show is unparalleled. The Hill Street Blues Theme left you in no doubt as to what show you were about to watch. Now his theme for NYPD Blue prepares you for an hour of the rough and tumble of New York City citizens, emotions and justice.

POST IS PERFECT!,

Mike Post does an excellent job with this latest album. All themes are great reminders to shows that weren't ALL so great. NYPD theme was excellent. It's one of the rare easy listening CDs that do not put you to sleep. Hopefully, in the future, Post will release a complication of ALL his great compositions (like the Hunter themes, A-Team, Doogie Howser, Magnum P.I., and all the other hits we all remember!)

Disappointing,

Bought this for the NYPD Blue theme after listening to several MP3 versions that didn't sound the same. Unfortunately, the theme on the disk also doesn't sound exactly like the one at the start of the show. It is close, so kept listening hopefully. Then to my dismay, started hearing vocals that aren't heard on the TV version. Don't know if the TV version is abbreviated or if the vocals were added for the CD, but they really detract from the main theme [IMO]. Since this specific track was the reason I bought the disk, it is a big disappointment.

Post is most,
This review is from: Inventions from the Blue Line (Audio CD)
Mike Post is a Studio City, California composer/musician/arranger who has written theme songs for many TV programs ranging from Silk Stalkings to NYPD Blue. This album contains some theme songs and some original compositions. It was released during 1994 and therefore is incomplete but that does not mean it is substandard. This is modern American jazz for the masses and it is very good. My only complaint is that it only contains ten tracks. Hey Mike: when do we get a double album?

I loved this CD.,

I've always loved the music in NYPD Blue, and hoped to find a CD with that music on it. The best thing about this CD is that the music is diffferent--easy listening, but doesn't put you to sleep.

No kidding, when "Law & Order" first came on TV, I was really grooving on the theme--then I looked at the end credits and said "Mike POST?!?!". I mean, this was the guy responsible for the lamest TV theme ever--"The Rockford Files" theme. I used to watch "Rockford" religiously--once I got past the theme. I mean, it was a toss-up which was more annoying; supporting character Angel Martin, or that blaring synth lead doing one of the ditziest melodies I've ever heard. I've got nothing against synthesizers--I own two or three--but back in those days, it was a prima facie case of overkill. Years later, when he did the "Magnum" theme, with its guitar/ brass/ strings-dominant aspect, I guess I wasn't paying attention. Then "L & O" came on, with its lucent clarinet lead over simple Hammond, and I went "wow". I wanted so much to own a song-length version of that number. Not to mention the "NYPD Blue" theme, with its thunderstorm of percussion. Maybe that's the secret, know what I mean? Post is a keyboard man, right? Maybe a composer realizing that his own instrument is not necessarily the one to put out front in a given tune is what it takes.

Theme song from Law and Order,

I have a quick question: Did Mike Post use the beat from Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City" for the 'Law and Order' theme song? I was listening to the song the other day and the beginning of the song sounds just like it. Any thoughts?
