Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Humankind's progress in this  world with technology has been utterly amazing. In  just 100 short years we've surpassed the advancements of all technology in the last 3,000 years.

When I was in grade school, my science teacher read aloud to us from a similar book. This was back in the late 1980's. I was utterly fascinated and my attention was captured: would we really have video phones and replace cash with things called "debit cards"? No way! That was the day I fell in love with science. I had this book on the brain for weeks.

Now I'd like to share that same excitement with the next wave of young adults who have a curiosity for the possibilities of the future. (But of course, you can expect way cooler stuff in this updated version.)

More than ever we need the next generation to be fostered in their pursuit of knowledge. It is our duty to help them see and understand the wondrous beauty of the natural world around us, and that they have the power to make a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Science For Kids" as read by a 55-year-old man. March 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't expect much from this. My biggest fear was that it would be yet another condescending book writing by a scholastic snob looking down his or her nose at the lowest common denominator reader. I was wrong - completely and utterly wrong - and my fears were baseless.

Each entry was not only fascinating, it also provided a handy hyperlink for anyone wanting additional information on the item under discussion. Because it is in fact written for a school-aged audience, each entry concludes with an open-ended invitation for the reader, or class group, to have a discussion session regarding the applications such an invention might have. While the adult reader just looking for some "cool stuff" to read about can breeze right by these discussion teasers, they are perfectly placed for an enterprising teacher to get some stimulated and involved consultation started. With all the sundry things that distract our children from investing themselves in the educational system these days, anything like this that may foster even a momentary stimulation to young minds is worthy of praise.

I like to think of myself as an "informed" adult. My wife and I are well-educated and like to keep track of new scientific developments - especially in medicine since our career backgrounds were based in medical fields. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were only a few of the items presented in Mr. Hartman's book that my wife and I some familiarity with from previous reading.

If I had one small complaint about this book is that it is far too short. Hopefully the author's intent is to publish a series of these - perhaps one per year once the trade and industrial showcase seasons have passed and the major technology companies have had a chance to unveil their latest prototypes in the auto, computer, medical, and even video gaming fields. If that is the plan, count me in as an avid collector and customer as each subsequent volume is published!
