Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Maserati features members of !!!, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean, and Turning Machine. "Inventions" is a sweaty, delirious mix of mid-to-late 70s Pink Floyd, German psych-rock, Krautrock, and mid-80s action film scores. It drags the glory years of psychedelic arena rock kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with the pomposity (and vocals) carefully removed. The mix is pushed firmly in the red, giving the songs a white-knuckled energy that, coupled with the ethereal guitar theatrics, puts one foot on the dance floor and the other on the ocean floor. For fans of Neu, Battles, Pink Floyd, Trans Am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeebus this record is stupendous, June 30, 2008
This record is one of the best i've come across in this new century. It's absolutely gorgeous while rocking, dancing, ebbing, and flowing all at the same time. It provides a sonic journey for the listener to saturate the senses with. The guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The drumming is flawless. It's like rave music mixed with the guitar playing of The Edge and the drumming of John Bonham while still providing a truely unique experience. I love it. Also, check out their split ep's with cinemechanica and the mercury program. They rule.

4.0 out of 5 stars harder edge than previous efforts, May 26, 2008
By AmazonCustomer999 (Tampa, Florida) - See all my reviews
Unless you're part of the Athens, Ga. music scene, easy to forget that Maserati even exists. 5 years since "Language of Cities", this album released. Far harder/sharper than prior albums, (which are kind of dreamy, like Tristeza or Mercury Program), this one sounds more like a live show. Mesmerizing guitar work. Still some mellow stuff. And extra credit for passing on a vocalist, so many bands are ruined by bad vocals they would sound better without. The opening track is awesome. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Pink Floyd for hipsters" indeed, August 1, 2007
For the last decade Athens, Georgia has been a hotbed for bands that stray away from highly stylized music in favor of showcasing their art outside the boundaries of conformity. The psychedelic instrumentalists in Maserati exemplify this mindset with a unique brand of music they call "Pink Floyd for hipsters" and "stoner rock for the working man." Seven years since their conception, the quartet who bucks the idea of having a vocalist, is back on the scene with a new full length album, Inventions for the New Season, released in the states on Temporary Residence.

Chock full of beat-heavy instrumentals, Inventions comes across as highly experimental without being overtly eclectic. To highlight one specific track on Inventions would underestimate its assumed purpose, as this concept album invokes an elevated emotional state that's best attained by listening from start to finish. Maserati uses basic instrumentation (guitars, drums, bass) in place of the bells and whistles incorporated into most of today's production to create lengthy songs (often 7-9 minutes) that are fundamentally primitive. While Inventions might not make it into your iPod playlist for your commute to work, it is a "place and purpose" album that very well may provide the soundtrack to your next house party or substance-induced journey.
